Hi,

This is a spoon made by George Gordon & Co. of Popham's Broardway, Madras. This was the firm that Peter and Alexander Orr joined in 1843, on their arrival in India.
They took over the business from the retiring George Gordon in 1849.

Is this the same Gordon as the one from Gordon & Lovell of Madras?

Hi Miles,

I'm not sure. I know there were three Gordons', Hugh, Robert and George, who were I believe all of the same family.
Hopefully Pat can provide the answer, He has a rare copy of Wynyard Wilkinson's book.

Hi Miles,

Tom has now added a new section listed under 'World Marks' to cover Indian colonial marks,

If you have any others, I'm sure he will be pleased to receive them.

Hi Miles and Trev.

Sorry I missed your post earlier Miles. I do have Wynyard R.T. Wilkinson's original book that was published in 1973.
He also published a later, revised edition in 1987.

Looks like Tom answered your question on the new page for Indian Colonial Silver.

Pat.

Hi,

This is a photo taken earlier this year of the old factory of P.Orr & Son. It makes for sad viewing.
