Need help with this logo, and hallmark

Postby Hjulben » Mon Sep 08, 2008 7:14 am

Need help explaining the wild boar at the frontside on this sauce ladle. And maybe as a bonus, the hallmark at the backside. I have figure out the maker, Henry & Henry John Lias. London, lion passant for sterling, but the rest…….?

Hi Hjulben,

The boar is an engraved family crest probably that of the original owner of your ladle. Many families used the same crest and you would be unlikely to trace the family.
You are correct the maker is Henry John Lias (No. 1) and Henry John Lias (No 2). Father and Son trading as Henry John Lias & Son. Their workshops were at Salisbury Court, Fleet Street, London.

The Hallmarks are 1, Leopards Head for London, 2, Lion Passant denoting Sterling standard 925/1000, 3, Date mark for 1864 and the Duty mark showing the head of Queen Victoria.

Regards Trev.
