What-is-it question CXV.

Postby 2209patrick » Thu Aug 21, 2008 8:32 pm

These types of vessels were made in the late 17th century and very early 18th century.

The first picture shows one made by Ralph Leake, London, c.1685.
It is about 5 inches (12.5 cm.) tall.
The second picture shows another example that was made c.1709.

What were they called ?
What was the purpose of the three things sticking up from the detachable lid ?

Silver chocolate cups, the cover can be used as a saucer? The the three things sticking up from the detachable lid would be feet when the cover was inverted.

Well done JLDoggett.

Yes, thet are called chocolate cups.
The three things on top do allow the lid to be used as a saucer when turned over.
