Please help unknown mark and item

I'm a novice collector and came across this item in a box of other silver items i have tried to find out what the hallmark is but havent succeeded.....all help would be appreciated and if any one knows what this item is??? i think it is a cruet stand ?maybe

forgot to mention that it is stamped 1829 i think the initials are JS&S but i cant find what the star/daisy means

Hello.

Not sure who used your JS&S mark, but it's likely British silverplate. The star is just a pseudo mark.

How big is the piece ?

thanks for the answer it is about 23cm long 3cm high 11cm to top of handle and the shields on the side are about 3*2cm...hope you can understand all this...
also the feet have wht appears to be a leaf pattern.....can i ask another question or two??
how will i go about cleaning it??i have dipped in warm water and baking soda....hope i havent done it any harm
how old do you think it is? as i mentioned it is stamped 1829....to think that i am holding something that has lasted all those years.....i would hate to ruin it by cleaning the wrong way

Hi Lulu.

Being in the U.S.A., I need to turn centimeters into inches so it makes sense to me.
23 cm. long = 9.06 inches.
3 cm. high = 1.18 inches.
11 cm. to top of handle = 4.33 inches.
Shield is 3.2 cm. high = 1.26 inches.

I'd guess that this piece would have held glass dishes for serving various foods.

1829 is probably just a catalog number. That year is too early for electroplating which was invented later.
Difficult to guess the date of manufacturer, but it could date to the late 19th or early 20th century.

I'd suggest using a cream polish for silver to clean it. Avoid those liquid silver cleaners, they take more of the silverplate off.
I use Wright's silver cream.
