unknow German silver hallmark

Postby grafas » Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:06 am

Hello, greetings from Magdeburg! I'm new here, hope to get some help!

Have bought this silver piece on a flea market, who can give some informations about the hallmarks.

Have a nice weekend, Matthias!

The center mark is the city mark of Gdansk, Poland (formerly the Prussian & German city of Danzig) and is taken from the city arms. The mark on the right - “R” - is the mark of guild assayer Ferdinand Robert Raths, working 1856-1861. Finally, the maker’s mark “C.SOHR” is that of Carl Sohr, working in Gdansk 1857-1880.

Thus: Carl Sohr, 1857-1861, Gdansk, Poland

Hope this helps!
