Please Help, Silver or plated? Maker? Age? Anything???

Postby jostema » Tue Jun 10, 2008 10:00 pm

I have two salvers I think might be sterling, not sure. They seem to be very old. I'm not at all familiar with the marks or the silversmithing on these. They have been in my boyfriends family for several generations. Each is 6 1/2 inches in diameter and they have four shell design feet. They are very ornate with alot of details. The marks are different on each one with the exception of a "FK" with a star and a crown in a shield. Each one is numbered also, one has "11=10" and the other has "11=9=". Any idea?? Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The makers mark appears to be that of the great Charles Frederick Kandler, but the other marks I cannot make out.
You say there are a different set of marks on each one. Can you post a photo of the other set?

Hi, the first two pictures are of one salver and the third picture is of the second salver. The only mark that they both have is of the letters"F & K" in the shield.

It does appear to be Kandler's maker's mark, suggest you send photos to a reputable auction house.

The 11=9 and 11=10 are the weights of the salvers which I think may have been engraved on to prevent people clipping pieces off.

It stands for 11 ounces and 9 pennyweights; there are 20 pennyweights in an ounce.
