Reference suggestions

Postby bathrick » Tue Mar 04, 2008 7:07 pm

I'm looking for recommendations for information on dating American coin silver spoons by the shape and techniques used in manufacturing.

This is a long shot, but maybe not. I remember a number of years ago reading an article that gave approximate dates for spoons based on handle shape - does anyone know what it was?

Any other suggestions for books or articles useful for American Coin Silver research? Any organizations? any good websites besides this one? Google, Yahoo, etc. have become unwieldy in such searches.

For the most comprehensive site specializing in Early American silversmith information, see our links page.

The Kovels had a large section in their book Know Your Antiques which must date from the 1970s - shapes not just of flatware but also
coffee and tea pots

There is also a line drawing chart of American spoon forms & their dates in Kovel's "American Silver Marks". I've just looked at it for the first time in years and I it looks as if some of the dates should be adjusted.
There is also an abbreviated version in " American Silversmiths and Their Marks" by Ensko.
If memory serves, there was also an accurate dating chart as an appendix in Belden. My copy was lost years ago, could someone check that out?

Thanks! I used to have Kovels, and Ensko but they were lost in a move. That's probably where I saw them. I haven't heard of Belden - but since Amazon wants $600 for it, I doubt I'll ever see a copy.

What errors are in Kovels?
