Hanau repro or Augsburg Bowl?

Postby admin » Thu Feb 07, 2008 2:50 pm

Hi,
Handmade piece, unfamiliar with the marks. I'm assuming it is a Hanau reproduction rather than an early Augsburg piece, but would like to hear other opinions.
Thanks, Tom

Hi,
Even is the left mark looks like the town mark for Augsburg 1779-1781, and the middle mark looks like the mark attributed either to Johann Bartermann (1741-1782) or to Johann Busch (1748-1794), the mark on the right (NRS) is the mark of Ludwig Neresheimer.

Therefore it is certainly an Hanau production.
Hope this helps.

Dinio,
Many thanks for the ID. I will be adding the mark to our upcoming section on Hanau marks which should be ready by mid April.

Regards, Tom

Tom

even leaving aside stylistic considerations, the metal looks too new, too even, too "pretty" and the marks are too new-looking. everything is "too" whatever. moreover the city mark doesn't look like the old city marks that are posted on the pre-1886 page.
