Hallmark identification on 18th century coin tankard

Postby Villamarea » Sun Feb 03, 2008 1:01 am

Respectfully I would appreciate your assistance in identifying the two hallmarks on this silver coin tankard. One mark is Rs (capital R and small s) and one mark is what appears to be a fish in an oval cartouche. I presume the tankard to be 18th century, but am uncertain. Thanks!

Hi Villamarea-

I am an amatuer, and would like to know why you have come to the conclusion that it is coin silver? It is a beautiful tankard; but what are what seem to be shields on it? Could you post a close up shot of them?

Regards- Byron

Thank you for the two responses. To be specific:
1. It is not coin silver, there are a total of 32 coins, metals and medallions embedded in the tankard; and
2. The coins are wide ranging from German, a 1617 Martin Luther jubilee metal, to a 1657 thaler of Ferdinand III, to a Spanish coin, and of all of the coins, the latest date I found was one minted 1711.
