WMF special extra marks - Star and 7/D

Postby SwissSilverBuff » Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:57 pm

Hi
I can't make out what the meaning of the star with the "o" in it nor the 7/D.
I'd be grateful for any hints where to look.

Hi,

The 7/D is I think 1/0 a silver plating mark used by WMF.

Hi,

See http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_W.html .
The style is Art Nouveau (around 1900).

Maybe my eyes aren't so good, it looks like 2/0 to me...

Thanks,

I looked at the WMF silver plate marks but couldn't find the star with the "o" in it.

2nd QUESTION. Does the 1/0 indicate how thick the plating is?

Hello, the star is not a WMF mark, it must have been added by someone else - possibly a retailer ? I/O means that 1 gramm of fine silver was spread on an aera of 10 x 10 centimetres. Best wishes, Bahner

I might add that I/O is regular silver coating. I agree that the star is not a WMF mark. If it had been, it could cause some confusion, since O is the WMF marking for extra thick coating.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that the mark on your piece was first used in 1910.
