THOMAS HOWIE

Dundee

Scotland. Nov. 14. Came on before the High Court of Justiciary, the trial of James Dick, late ship-master, John Willox, innkeeper, and Thomas Howie, journeyman watchmaker, all of Dundee, indicted, for breaking into the office of the bank in that place, on the night between the 16th and 17th of February last, and stealing therefrom 423l, 7s. 6d. Sterling, or thereby ; the same crime for which Falconer and Bruce were condemned. The libel was found relevant, and the court proceeded to the examination of witnesses. Howie clearly proved an alibi by respectable witnesses. The Lord Advocate addressed the jury on the part of the crown, as did Mr Alexander Wight for Howie, and Mr George Fergusson for Dick and Willox; and they returned their verdict next day, finding, by a plurality of voices, James Dick guilty of the crime libelled, and all in one voice finding the libel not proven against James Willox and Thomas Howie, who were dismissed from the bar. Dick was sentenced to be executed at Edinburgh on Wednesday Jan.7. 1789.

JOHN NICHOLAS EMERY

Glenalmond, Perthshire

John Nicholas Emery (b.1913-d.1982) was an amateur silversmith and Schoolmaster, he also taught silversmithing at Perth Technical College during the 1970s. He was the author of 'European Spoons Before 1700', published in 1976. He registered his first mark with the Edinburgh Assay Office in 1947.

He exhibited silver hollow-ware and flatware at Perthshire Art Association's annual display at Perth Museum and Art Gallery in 1962 and 1965.

This Perth spoon, assayed in 1809, bears the additional mark of John Nicholas Emery, it is unknown why this extra mark was struck, but Phil (silvermakersmarks) has suggested that perhaps Emery has repaired the spoon at some time, and indeed their has been a repair made to the spoon between the stem and the bowl. Another possibility is that Emery was a collector of spoons, and marked his collection with his own punch, an unfortunate method perhaps, but not one without precedence, as the Marquess of Breadalbane, who I think was also a Perthshire man and one of the first serious collectors of old silver and a contributor to Sir Charles Jackson's original work, struck 'Breadalbane' on the items in his collection.

Born Thomas McGuirman, son of Donald McGuirman, farmer, near Inverness.

Apprenticed to Alexander Stewart, Inverness, in c.1798.

Apprenticeship completed on the 27th September 1805, at which date he appears to have taken his Master's name.

Relocated to London, presumably to gain experience, and married there to Mary Lockwood, the daughter of the Jeweller, Richard Lockwood, at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, on the 26th February 1812. Thomas Stewart sets up business on his own account at Elgin in that same year.

Thomas Stewart remained in business at Elgin until 1827, when he departed the town apparently because of financial difficulties.

By 1829 he had relocated to Inverness, and probably worked as a journeyman until c.1835 when he likely restarts his business and is recorded in the records of the Inverness Hammerman.

Thomas Stewart died on the 3rd March 1856, the business then passed to Thomas's son, Richard Lockwood.

More information regarding Thomas Stewart can be found in: Provincial Silversmiths of Moray and Their Marks by G.P. Moss - 1994

John Watson's working period is thought to be between 1847 and 1886.

This mark has in the past been previously attributed to James Walker, but current thinking has it more likely to be John Watson.

Daniel McLean was the son of Robert McLean a weaver in Edinburgh.

It appears likely that he was the first apprentice booked to John Ziegler. The indentures were booked on the 10th November 1804.

After working for a period as a journeyman, most probably in Edinburgh, he set up his own business on his own account in Perth and is thought to have worked there from 1821 until 1824. From 1824 to 1827 he appears in Edinburgh directories located at Gray’s Court, Nicholson Street.
