As from the 16th June 2021, the Indian government has introduced mandatory gold and silver jewellery hallmarking across 256 districts, including major cities such as Mumbai. The hallmarking policy applies to jewellers and jewellery retailers with an annual turnover of INR4 million.

There are now 972 Assaying & Hallmarking Centres, a growing figure. Each centre is capable of marking 1,500 items a day.

Piyush Goyal, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Consumer Affairs, said, "Continuing our government's endeavour for better protection and satisfaction of customers, mandatory hallmarking in 256 districts will be implemented from 16 June. No penalty will be imposed till August 2021. This will help develop India as a leading global gold market centre."
