Charles H. Lee, 15 years old, of 207 E. 74th St., who was arrested recently after he had called for a package from Tiffany’s which had been delivered to K. Van Rensselaer at his home, 39 E. 65th St., was discharged in Children’s Court last week: by Justice Olmstead. The court decided that the boy had not been trying to steal and was telling the truth when he said he had been requested by a man to call for the package.

Three of the largest steel trusses ever employed in Manhattan building construction will be utilized in the new Tiffany & Co. building at Fifth Ave. and 57th St. Plans call for an unobstructed main showroom floor 85 by 100 feet in size, with a ceiling height of 24 feet. Seven upper floors will be supported by these trusses, which, considering their length, will carry a greater load than similar bridge trusses.

The Eleder Hickok Co. is the name of a new concern that has been formed to continue the business formerly conducted by the Eleder Co. A corporation has been formed for the manufacture of the highest type of sterling silver hollow-ware and the principal office will be at 23 Prospect Ave. The officers are C. W. Eleder, president; C. W. Hickok, secretary-treasurer, and J. W. Steiwald, vice-president. The corporation has been formed under the New Jersey laws. Mr. Eleder, the president of the new concern, started his career in the jewelry business with Tiffany & Co., in the Forest Hill plant, where he learned his trade and then was with the Wm. B. Kerr Co. and later superintendent for Lebkeulder & Co., which concern was purchased and later run as the Eleder Co. Mr. Hickok, who is well known in the silver trade, was for a time with the Gorham Co. and for a long period of years has been associated with Graff-Washbourne & Dunn. Neat announcements of the formation of the new concern have been sent out to the trade and many friends wish them success in their new venture.

FIFTH AVENUE'S TIFFANY & CO. HAD A PROFITABLE 1958, ended up with 29 per cent more net profit than in 1957 ($322,476 after taxes in 1958). Year's dubious highlight: the fantastic daylight robbery of an impressive amount of Tiffany jewels Aug. 10, just before the big New York jewelry show.

Tiffany & Co.'s Silver Polish To Be Distributed by Babbitt

Tiffany’s ever-popular brand of silver polish will now be available to housewives throughout the country. Tiffany’s has awarded the distributorship of the silver polish to B. T. Babbitt, Inc., makers of Bab-O, Cameo Copper Cleaner and other nationally known products.

Babbitt’s distribution, advertising and sales of the polish will promote the idea that steriing silver can now be treated with “the Tiffany Touch” in every state of the Union.

Tiffany develops tarnish-proof coating for sterling which lasts indefinitely

A means of tarnish-proofing sterling hollowware without changing its appearance has been developed by Tiffany & Co. after five years of research.

According to Tiffany spokesmen, the process consists of depositing a translucent chemical coating on silver that protects it from damage by salt, sulphur, acetic acid or heat.

In intensive testing it has been found resistant to all damage except scratching and will last indefinitely, without peeling or chipping.

Tests involved exposure to heat, hot soapy water, alcohol, salt, sunlight, lipsticks, perspiration, nail polish remover, various acids and countless foods. In one test a lighted cigarette was placed on a piece of coated silver and allowed to burn for 10 minutes.

In no case was there a breakdown in the coating. At worst only stains resulted, and these were easily removed with soft cloth and water, Tiffany spokesmen say.

They foresee the day when glass liners for salt cellars and mustard pots will be unnecessary.

Sells for more

Tarnish-proofed Tiffany silver will sell for 10 per cent more than untreated sterling and will be sold by Tiffany-franchised jewelers as well as the New York store.

Tiffany will begin tarnish-proofing silver bought prior to the development of the process in about a year’s time. Sterling purchased at Tiffany will have priority, a spokesmen said. Later, non-Tiffany sterling will also be accepted for tarnish-proofing.

Tarnish-proofing antique silver in museums may be undertaken at a future date.

A spokesmen said the process may be applied to sterling jewelry but for the present will be used and recommended only for hollowware. Because of its constant exposure to scratching, flatware does not lend itself to tarnish-proofing.
