A carboy of vitriol belonging to R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Wallingford, caught fire at the owner’s yards one afternoon last week. The car was side-tracked, and after an attempt to send in a fire alarm had failed word was sent to the Wallace hose house and the concern’s fire fighters soon extinguished the blaze.

R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Wallingford, Conn., Issues an Attractive Catalog

R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Wallingford, Conn., has issued an attractive catalog known as “Wallace Sterling Silver, Catalog S-28,” which contains 95 pages showing the fine line of sterling silver produced by this company. The illustrations are in black and white and are particularly clear and well arranged. Services in both flatware and hollowware that have held the attention of the buying public for some time as well as the great many items, that while new, have been on the market sufficiently long to prove their salability, are illustrated. Particular attention is given to the antique service in both flatware and hollowware. The catalog illustrates the newer Wallace patterns and designs together with the well known and popular patterns that have been selling for years. The variety and extent of the lines covered in this catalog offer a wide range of selection. Examples of the Princess Anne, Renaissance, Washington, Princess Mary, Monterey, Orange Blossom, and Dauphine hollowware lines, are illustrated and in flatware, the Puritan, Carmel, Cabot, Juliet, Putnam and other lines are shown, together with combinations in chests and various other lines, including coffee sets, sugar and cream sets and various other pieces. A portion of the catalog is devoted to the illustration of a fine line of prize cups, dresser silver and other items. The catalog is bound in flexible blue and green cover and is particularly attractive.

Branch Managers and Salesmen of R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co. Hold Convention

The semi-annual sales convention of the Wallingford, New York and Philadelphia branches of the R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., was held at headquarters in Wallingford Conn., on June 26 and 27, being attended by all the managers and salesmen of these branches as well as company and department executives.

Despite present business conditions, reports indicated that the silver industry has not suffered as much as other lines and that prosperity such as was enjoyed in early 1929 will repeat itself, with improvement in that direction beginning to manifest itself before the passing of many weeks. The optimistic outlook was based on the fact that everybody eats and they naturally eat with silver whether it be one grade or another.

At the first dinner, the sales force heard an informative talk on the “History of Silver” by Fred Cooper of Philadelphia.

Behind-the-curtain scenes in broadcasting were interestingly portrayed in a talk by Tom Sabin of the National Broadcasting Co. The radio phase of Wallace advertising has been unique in that Wallace is the first silversmith to sponsor a full evening period on the air. The responses to this type of sales promotion have proved most interesting.

The convention proper under the direction of the general sales manager, Kenneth Mills, took place in the main plant. Many new numbers, including the $6,000 Sterling golf trophy, were displayed. They were presented by Messrs. Mottram, Gadd and Warren. Sales promotional schemes were outlined by Charles H. Gregory, sales promotion manager. The outstanding feature of the session was the presentation of the new Sterling pattern, “Reflection” by Floyd Wallace.

A banquet at the New Haven Country Club at which Mr. Gregory was master-of-ceremonies was the concluding affair. Radio and stage talent entertained. At this finale, prizes for the Luxor Plate Sales Contest were announced. E. Allen Hale of Philadelphia, clinched first place while John Stewart, Jackson Boehm and Ross Baxter of the Chicago division were next in that order. The rest of the 10 prizes were distributed equally among the Wallace branches.
