Re: Information Regarding Murrle, Bennett & Co.
A GLASGOW JEWELLERY ROBBERY
The police have at last succeeded in making an arrest in connection with the somewhat mysterious robbery of jewellery in Glasgow last January. On the 23rd of that month a traveller named Melhuish. employed by Messrs. Murrle, Bennett, and Co., jewellers, of Charterhouse-street, London, was doing business in Glasgow, when, during the temporary absence of the porter, a case of sample Jewellery, valued at £500, disappeared from a hand barrow. All trace of it was lost, despite a vigilant search, but a few days ago the Manchester police received such information that Detective-sergeant Herald Smith proceeded to Blackpool, and there arrested a man named Robert Scanlon, of Lytham-road. At Manchester Scanlon was shown about £100 worth of jewellery which had previously been identified by Mr. Melhuish, and the accused made a statement to the effect that he received it from two men a few days after it was stolen. Scanlon, who was formerly in business at Preston, will in all probability be handed over to the custody of the Glasgow Police.

EXTENSIVE JEWEL THEFTS
An Alleged Receiver on Trial at Manchester
At Manchester City Police-court yesterday an elderly man, named Robert Scanlan, who gave an address in Lytham-road, Blackpool, was charged on remand with receiving about £400 worth of stolen jewellery. In January last Mr. Melhuish, commercial traveller from Messrs. Murrle, Bennett, and Company, jewellers, of Charterhouse-square, London, was waiting on some clients in Glasgow, when his kit bag, containing various articles of jewellery, was stolen from the porter's barrow. From information which reached the Manchester police Detective-sergeant Smith apprehended at Blackpool the prisoner Scanlon, who, when shown certain articles of jewellery, said he had bought them from a man in Manchester, whom he did not know. He informed the detective that he had paid for them at different times. Afterwards he said he would make a clean breast of the matter, as he was not going to stand the racket. He had not made a single penny out of the transaction, and was not aware until recently where the jewellery came from.
James Rainford, general dealer and merchant, of Fennel-street, Manchester, stated that he bought £54 worth of jewellery, consisting of gold bracelets, from the prisoner on February 3. He had known the prisoner for 30 years as a dealer in jewellery.
Prisoner was remanded for further inquiries to be made.
