The Bailey, Banks Biddle Co., of this city, has been notified that it has been awarded by Governor Swanson, of Virginia, the contract for a $5,000 silver service for the battleship Virginia. The service is to be presented to the warship by the State of Virginia. The date for the presentation of the service has not yet been fixed. The last award made to Philadelphia jewelers for battleship services was that made to J. E. Caldwell & Co., for the Pennsylvania which cost $25,000. The Virginia's service is to consist of about 50 pieces. The Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. will make an elaborate punch bowl, tray cups and ladles, coffee and tea services and trays, dessert service and a dinner set, which will include vegetable dishes, a sauce boat and meat platter. The centrepiece and candelabra was made previously for the Colonial Dames of America in Virginia and will form part of the service of the new battleship, although not included in the contract award made by the Virginia State authorities.

J. Albert Caldwell, senior member of the firm J. E. Caldwell & Co., sailed, last week, on the American liner Philadelphia for Europe on his annual trip, combining business with pleasure.

J. E. Caldwell & Co. was given the contract last week for the prize cups and medals to be awarded at the invitation golf tournament of the Huntingdon Valley Country Club.

Kind & Son, 1110 Chestnut St., were guests at a luncheon given by the Gorham Co. at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel. Miss Alberta E. Brenner spoke on “The Romance of Silver.”

J. E. Caldwell & Co.’s alterations in their Chestnut street store have made that establishment handsomer than ever, and, in fact, put further improvement out of the question.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Winter were guests at the J. E. Caldwell & Co. store on Chestnut near Broad St. on March 15 and 16. They described and explained the art work Mr. Winter had painted on bowls, plates and panels which have been purchased by collectors, decorators and museums throughout the United States. Edward Winter also explained his new experiments with vitreous enamels on featherweight, thin aluminum. On exhibit, at the same time, were plates and other objects of steel and copper. Barbara Barnes, in her column in the Evening Bulletin, described the future effect of the Winter’s art work on readers: “The application of this decorated lightweight metal to refrigerators, ranges, household appliances. and even boats could open up all sorts of possibilities in design. Think, for example, of having a black matte surfaced refrigerator with white decorations on it!” The artists received publicity on the women’s pages through the Barbara Barnes column illustrated with a picture of them surrounded by their art work.

Edward T. Chase, of J. E. Caldwell & Co, has purchased through the Germantown Trust Co., from George M. Randle, a handsome stone residence on W. Horter St., Germantown. The consideration is not disclosed.

J. A. Caldwell, of J. E. Caldwell & Co., has just returned from an extensive European trip. Mr. Caldwell has brought with him an unusual collection of artistic and beautiful pieces, which can be seen in the various sections of this store.

J. E. Caldwell & Co., Chestnut & Juniper Sts., last month was completing renovation of its two large display windows on the Chestnut St. side of the store. The windows were moved forward approximately 18 inches so as to be flush with outside pillars and the building line. The windows formerly were recessed. The store’s new air-cooling system began operation in July.

Frank Schlichter, of the diamond department of J. E. Caldwell & Co., Chestnut and Juniper Sts., returned Aug. 8 from a two-week vacation in Wellsboro, Pa. C. W. Hare, also of the diamond department, left Aug. 8 for a vacation in Ocean City, N. J., and on Chesapeake Bay. George A. Moore, of the same department, returned Aug. 1 from a two-week stay in Lancaster County. O. A. Ritter, of the watch department, expected to leave Aug. 15 for two weeks in Asbury Park, N. J., and Milford, Pa.

William Ross Eisenhower, who rose from office boy to chairman of the board of J. E. Caldwell & Co., jewelry firm, left an estate estimated at “$50,000 and upwards,” the filing of his will for probate revealed. Mr. Eisenhower died April 16 at Ventnor, N. J. The entire estate was bequeathed to his widow, Caroline, of 719 Vernon Road, Germantown. The will stipulated that his interest in the Philadelphia jewelry firm as well as all other holdings be held in trust for Mrs. Eisenhower for life to provide a $12,000 annual income for her. Upon her death, the income is to be shared equally by two daughters, Mrs. Jay S. Jones, Jr., Philadelphia, and Mrs. Edward E. Connor, Providence, R. I.

The formal presentation yesterday to the battleship Pennsylvania of the handsome $25,000 silver service made for it by J. E. Caldwell & Co. was one of the most elaborate ceremonies of its kind ever held at the League Island Navy Yard. City officials, members of the firm of J. E. Caldwell & Co., and navy and army officers attended. The silver service for the Pennsylvania is the largest and most costly ever given to a boat of the United States Navy.

J. E. Caldwell and Co. decorated one window showing giftwares in an unusual and modern manner, using real evergreen boughs, holding colorful balls cascading down them without obvious means of support to point to the merchandise. However repeated attempts to capture and reproduce this picture have failed because of conflicting holiday lights on Chestnut Street a spokesman for the store informed us. Unfortunately, we will not be able to show it.
