Manager Goodman King and A, F. Strasburger, of the Mermod & Jaccard Company, left early in last month for a ten days’ trip in the East, during which they will visit the larger cities. The object of their trip is to inspect the most modern fire-proof buildings, with a view to introducing the latest improvements in the building to be erected for their company on the site of the one destroyed by fire just prior to last Christmas. Immediately upon their return plans will be made for the erection of the building, which is to be thoroughly modern and fire-proof.

The permit for the new building to be occupied by the Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Company, at the northwest corner of Broadway and Locust Street, was issued May 10th. The buiilding will have a frontage of 100 feet on Broadway, and will run back 127 feet on Locust Street. It will be eight stories high, and cost in the neighborhood of $275,000, When completed it will be one of the handsomest jewely establishments in the country.

RELICS OF THE BIG FIRE

St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 8. The work of removing the valuable silver, china and glassware from the ruins of the Mermod-Jaccard building continues incessantly, and at the present rate it is thought the work will have been completed by the 15th of January.

Superintendent Vincent said that yesterday was a successful day, as far as finding valuables was concerned. Nearly 20 loads were taken out, and had been removed to the storeroom at 408 North Fourth street, by the time the workmen engaged in the digging quit work last night. Mr. Vincent said the value of yesterday's "discovery" would undoubtediy run up into the thousands of dollars, although it would be impossible to compute the actual value of the ware until the damage could be ascertained.

A curious incident was noticed in connection with the recovered valuables, which consisted mostly of china, silver and glass vases. While the silver and china vases were, some of them, hopelessly injured, the glass vases were comparatively intact. Hardly any of them were shattered; only a few were cracked, while the greater number will, with a little cleaning, be ready again for sale. This is regarded as decidedly strange, as the débris with which the vases were covered was over 10 feet deep.

The crowds have daily increased in density around the ruins, until it has become necessary to fence them in. A gate has been stretched across the alley in the rear of the building on Locust street. A large number of watchmen are still being kept around the place.

It is well worth a man's time to visit the storeroom on Fourth street. Vases, basins, candlesticks and dishes of various kinds are stored there, twisted into various shapes. Some of them are decidedly odd and fantastic, and would serve very well as curios in a museum. Perhaps one of the queerest results of the fire is a silver plated candelabra. There are four different branches to the candelabra that radiate in various directions, the object being to make it as fantastic as possible. These branches are bent in exactly the opposite manner in which they were originally constructed. No goldsmith could have made a prettier job of it. The basin of the candelabra is broken, but it is otherwise intact. Superintendent Elliott of the storeroom thinks it is one of the most curious objects that he ever beheld. The intrinsic value of the candelabra is about $35.

Another object of curiosity is an imported silver-plated cake stand. The basin of the stand consisted of valuable cut glass. The glass was broken by the falling timber, and the film of the stand that was designed to protect it from tarnishing was melted, but otherwise the stand was not injured. A handsome silver circular handle was not touched, but the glass immediately underneath was smashed into smithereens.

A valuable basin, estimated by the underwriters to be worth $800, was ruined by the fire. The basin is now in the office of Capt. Evans of the Salvage Corps, whither it was removed by order of the insurance men. The material is some kind of foreign ware, and is handsomely hand-painted. To the casual observer it would not seem to be damaged, but it is said that a small crack has rendered it almost worthless. The basin was standing in a show window at the time of the fire, and was apparently unscathed, When Capt. Evans started to remove the basin he found that, in addition to the crack, the top of the basin had been severed from the base, the same as if a sharp blade had been passed through it.

There are a number of other smaller basins and pieces of silverware in the valuables that have been removed to the storeroom.

As fast as they are taken out they are placed in coal oil, if there is any chance of saving them, whence they will later be taken and reburnished.
