The business of manufacturing silversmith carried on for many years by Mr. George Nathan under the style of Nathan & Hayes, has, from March 5th, been acquired by the well-known firm of S. Blanckensee & Son, Ltd. Mr. Nathan, who is retiring into private life, will for a few months remain with Messrs. Blanckensee, and give special orders his personal attention.

S. Blanckensee & Son, of Frederick Street, one of our most energetic and prosperous houses, well known throughout the kingdom for the excellence of their work, and whose productions are equalled by few, have, I am pleased to say, successfully competed for a piece of work, in the form of a key, to be used at the opening of a public park at Leicester. I learn, from good authority, that the eminent firm of T. & J. Bragg, of Mayoral chain fame, tendered for this and have to congratulate Messrs. Blanckensee upon their success in the face of such powerful competitors.

There are evidently a number of people with money to invest who are sanguine of a trade in the jewellery branches, as I hear, from very reliable sources, that Messrs. S. Blanckensee & Son, Limited, has become une fait accompili, the shares being nearly all taken up. There has been no great rush, but this, I think, no one expected, the jewellery trade having a bad name as a speculation just now.

Messrs. Blanckensee seem just now rather unfortunate in their legal disputes. Their action against the Midland Railway Company to recover the value of a stolen parcel has been decided against them. I understand, that in this case Messrs. Blanckensee are not the actual losers, as they were really moving on behalf of the insurance company with whom they had insured the parcel.

I can now pass on to something more satisfactory than failures, and first I am pleased to note that the balance-sheet of Messrs. S. Blanckensee and Sons, Limited, shows a better state of their affairs than they have previously been able to tell. They have at last got over their difficulties in Spain, as well as certain other matters which have tended to hinder them for the last few years, and they declare a first dividend of 5 per cent. This is satisfactory so far, and I hope they will now go on in increasing prosperity. I Was somewhat amused to notice, as a secondary evidence of their growing prosperity, that they are having a thorough renovation of their premises in Frederick-street, both inside and out. Also they are having some extensive improvements internally, which will enable them the better to cope with their great body of business.

The alteration at Messrs. S. Blanckensee and Son, Limited, are nearly completed, and are a decided improvement. One important feature is the introduction of the electric light, and the general result is very satisfactory. As soon as the Electric Supply Company tap the jewelers' district, which I understand will be their next move, I expect to see a great many firms adopt the new light. It is clean, healthy, and much superior to gas for bench use. Concentrated by a glass or shaded with tissue paper, it affords a clear, mellow, white light which is far easier to work by than gas, and at the same time cool and pleasant.

I hear that Messrs. S. Blanckensee and Son, Limited, Frederick-street, are having a large demand for their new " Bridesmaids' jewelry," which promises to be as successful as their registered "Alpine Bell" designs.

My readers will not fail to observe the new departure which has been made by Messrs. S. Blanckensee and Son, Limited, Frederick-street, who have opened a special department for the sale and purchase of businesses, valuation of stocks, and insurance against theft, burglary, and fire. It is no doubt a fact, as stated by Messrs. Blanckensee, that this is the first time in the history of the trade that a wholesale house has undertaken this kind of business, but it is an obvious development for a firm with such extensive ramifications. I am personally aware that the services of Mr. Aaron Blanckensee, the managing director, have been in great request for many years in the valuation and transfer of jewelry businesses, and there can be no question as to the value of his judgment in such transactions. At the same time carefully rendered help of this description will infallibly result in an extension of the ordinary business of the firm and create a favorable impression on those who benefit by it. I heartily wish them all success in their fresh venture, but I may add that I shall be rather surprised if they do not find more Richmonds in the field ere long.

The structural repairs and alterations in the showrooms recently taken by Lionel Blanckensee, of North-street Birmingham, in High Holborn, opposite Meeking's, are now completed, and as much stock packed into the premises as it will hold. He has some of the most astonishing low priced lines, especially in mounted goods.

Important "Appro" Case

An action brought by Alfred Appleby jeweler, of 124, Vyse-street, against Aaron Blanckensee, jeweler, of Frederick-street, for £297 1 2s., for goods sold and delivered, has been heard at the Birmingham Assizes before Mr. Justice Kennedy. The case for the plaintiff was that in September, 1891, the defendant, Aaron Blanckensee, and his son Edward called at plaintiffs place of business, and the father said his son, who was going abroad, wanted an assortment of diamonds on approbation. Plaintiff did not at first show the better-class goods, and the father noticing this spoke out rather sharply, saying to the plaintiff, " What are you afraid of, man ? I am going to be responsible for these goods.'' On this the plaintiff showed a better class of goods, and a stock was selected from them. The goods were delivered, the understanding being that they were to be on approbation for seven months. When that period elapsed the goods had not been returned, and the matter was, therefore, treated as a debt, the bill being sent to the plaintiff's firm, which had since become a limited company. When application was made for payment defendant said that the goods were not for him, but for his son, who was in business apart from him. The defence was that defendant had neither ordered nor received the goods, and was therefore not liable. His version was that he said to plaintiff, " I have nothing to do with these goods. My son is going out on his own account entirely, and I have nothing to do with his business," and the plaintiff replied "All right." The judge having summed up, the jury found for the plaintiff, for the amount claimed, and judgment was given accordingly. Later on application was made for a stay of execution on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence. His Lordship said it must be clearly understood he did not encourage the application. The terms upon which he should grant it would be that the whole of the money be paid into court, and the expenses of plaintiff's solicitor paid with the usual undertaking to return them.
