THE BLACKSTONE HOTEL
Opened c.1908 in Chicago. Known as the "Hotel of Presidents" and the source of the political term "smoke-filled room". Named after Drake family business partner involved in Chicago & Alton Railroad and Union Stockyards. Drake Hotel was built by taking a loan against the Blackstone property. Still extant through many changes of ownership and alterations. Demi/Coffee spoon topmarked with logo and backmarked with name. Pattern is Blackstone (1906) with design credited to Wm. C. KURHAUS BAD-NAUHEIM (Germany)
A rather plain ware by the firm of Karl Kaltenbach of Altensteig. Standard 90 grade mark. "Gravuris" word-mark dates the item from 1930's onward. Though it has a long history, Bad-Nauheim is celebrated for being the place where Elvis Presley lived while serving his military tenure at a close-by US Army base. Unfortunately, the King of Rock and Roll did not perform at the concert hall within the Kurhaus (his only non-US concerts were in Canada). The Kurhaus itself suffered a fire in the recent past, but has been restored to operation. Spoon handle angled for better viewing of the worn stamps:

SYMMES CAFE or Symmes Grill: Ocean Park California
(Tentative Identification): SYMMES CAFE located on The Promenade between Ocean Park and Santa Monica known for seafood and Ice Cream. Different accounts list the owner as H.C. Symmes or H.J. Symmes living at 157 Kinney Street (or alternately at Kinney Street and Trolleyway). A 1920 address for the restaurant is shown as 2942 Ocean Front. In an advert. for the sale of his restaurant (31 Aug. 1921), Mr. Symmes refers to it as a cafe and lunch counter with soda fountain and cigar stand netting $4678 in the previous week (asking price $15,000). By 1930, a Thanksgiving Menu shows the name to be "Symmes Grill" listed at 112-114 Pier Avenue in "New Quarters" with "Added Capacity".
Basque immigrant Gregorio Salegui (14 Feb. 1889 - 31 Mar. 1957) brought his learned trade skills in ice cream making to Symmes Cafe where he worked circa 1917 until entering the armed services for WWI. (Later he would be a cook for the Clifford and St. Francis Hotels in San Francisco.)

Additional information for BRINKS CAFE (aka Brink's Cafe, Brink's New Cafe): Condensed from article in Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer Vol. VIII, no. 7, 23 December 1911, pg. 14.....Owner John E. Brink of 236 South Spring Street opening an "after-theatre" cafe and will spend about $50,000 on the improvements (detailed in article). He leased the ground and mezzanine floors as well as basement of the Realty Board Building on the west side of Spring Street south of Sixth through the J. Ross Cambell Company. Plans handled by Architects Eisen & Son, 383 Wilcox Building.

The Holiday Hotel Reno Nevada
On far side of Truckee River, away from main drag and railroad station. Built as a highway travelers (automobiles) destination with access to a game reserve. Meant to be a mid-century sportsmen's paradise, this hotel opened as a non-gaming venture in a town full of high rollers. After one year, re-sold and gambling was added. Survived through numerous owners and changes, but now a residential situation. Reed & Barton Triplex. Odd H may be found in buildings signage near lower floors, but does not relate to billboard type signs on upper floors. Possibly from an early service.

Addt. info The Holiday Hotel.....Pattern shown as "Embassy" (1988-95) while still operated as hotel. Pattern appears to be truncated from more detailed "Maid of Honor" Turner design (1935). Whether a commercial useage of Embassy pre-dates the 1988 date is not yet clear.
