United States Army Transport Service (USAT)..Operated from Spanish-American War era through WWI, logo shortened c.1942 to USAT in cloverleaf...operated vessels until late 1940's transporting troops, family members, and others. Replaced gradually by Transportation Corps within the military structure. Silverplate shell tray dating from 1942 by International Silver Company:

Henrici's Restaurant (Re-stamped?)..A Chicago institution which closed in 1962, it is reported that furnishings were sold and in some cases re-used. This fork is the Rochelle Pattern (1946-) used by International Silver and Victor Silver, stamped here with the 1847 Rogers Brothers mark. The script name for Henrici has been seen on other patterns, and a restamping of the name of a New York bar has been noted in one case. The new strike here reads "Cotillion", but it is not clear what it relates to. (A hosting service named Cotillion Banquets opened in Chicago in 1985 and is still operating.) An undated china cup is known to bear the Henrici name in script with the word "Delicatessen" hidden in a tail. There were also other locations for this restaurant, and varying owners of the name for some time later.

Simons Restaurants Southern California (centering on Los Angeles area)--once also operating a dairy lunch system, Simons became an iconic symbol of the SoCal automobile lifestyle peaking mid-century. Drive-in restaurants in classic architectural designs with neon lighting became the mainstay of their business. This fork by Victor Silver is in the Norman Pattern (1953-) also produced by International Silver. The Simons script name was easily spotted on the front of caps worn by carhops of the era:

Mission Inn, Riverside California..Built in stages starting in the 1800's from a small hotel known as the Glenwood Inn. Growth took off in the 1910 era when electric inter-urban trolley cars brought a flood of visitors to "the inland empire" of citrus orchards. Famous for eclectic mix of architectural additions, artworks, a bell collection, etc., and visited by President William Howard Taft (for whom a special chair was built) during events that later inspired the film "Tell 'em Willy Boy Was Here". An extensive history of efforts to save the structure which at times housed students and individuals of moderate means. Known to have also sold collector spoons with symbol in bowl and Glenwood Inn (back):

Sample strainer made by Elkington and Company (heavyweight with copper base metal showing through) and dated coded for 1912 (large A encircled). Pattern name not researched at this point. Logo is lion over ribbon clutching globe all under crown. Other versions use a torse and or wreaths rather than the ribbon (blue riband?).

With its cool green and white interior and its dainty equipments, the Cecil Café, which is the newest offshoot of the Hotel Cecil, makes a very pleasant halting-place in the Strand. Close to all the West End theatres, and having the advantages to be derived from the excellent hotel cuisine, the Cecil Café has special attractions for the neighbourhood of the Strand.

THE BLACKSTONE HOTEL

Opened c.1908 in Chicago. Known as the "Hotel of Presidents" and the source of the political term "smoke-filled room". Named after Drake family business partner involved in Chicago & Alton Railroad and Union Stockyards. Drake Hotel was built by taking a loan against the Blackstone property. Still extant through many changes of ownership and alterations. Demi/Coffee spoon topmarked with logo and backmarked with name. Pattern is Blackstone (1906) with design credited to Wm. C. Codman (also a sterling pattern with different name). Gorham Manufacturing Company Banquet Plate:

KURHAUS BAD-NAUHEIM (Germany)

A rather plain ware by the firm of Karl Kaltenbach of Altensteig. Standard 90 grade mark. "Gravuris" word-mark dates the item from 1930's onward. Though it has a long history, Bad-Nauheim is celebrated for being the place where Elvis Presley lived while serving his military tenure at a close-by US Army base. Unfortunately, the King of Rock and Roll did not perform at the concert hall within the Kurhaus (his only non-US concerts were in Canada). The Kurhaus itself suffered a fire in the recent past, but has been restored to operation. Spoon handle angled for better viewing of the worn stamps:

SYMMES CAFE or Symmes Grill: Ocean Park California

(Tentative Identification): SYMMES CAFE located on The Promenade between Ocean Park and Santa Monica known for seafood and Ice Cream. Different accounts list the owner as H.C. Symmes or H.J. Symmes living at 157 Kinney Street (or alternately at Kinney Street and Trolleyway). A 1920 address for the restaurant is shown as 2942 Ocean Front. In an advert. for the sale of his restaurant (31 Aug. 1921), Mr. Symmes refers to it as a cafe and lunch counter with soda fountain and cigar stand netting $4678 in the previous week (asking price $15,000). By 1930, a Thanksgiving Menu shows the name to be "Symmes Grill" listed at 112-114 Pier Avenue in "New Quarters" with "Added Capacity".
Basque immigrant Gregorio Salegui (14 Feb. 1889 - 31 Mar. 1957) brought his learned trade skills in ice cream making to Symmes Cafe where he worked circa 1917 until entering the armed services for WWI. (Later he would be a cook for the Clifford and St. Francis Hotels in San Francisco.)

BRINKS CAFE - Brinks Cafe of Excellence 635 South Spring Street (downtown) Los Angeles c.1910-15 era. Bottom marked on 1835 R. Wallace (hotel grade) 12" crumber. Brinks introduced live Cabaret in 1912. Full dates of operation are not currently known. Postcard views of interior dining room exist.

Additional information for BRINKS CAFE (aka Brink's Cafe, Brink's New Cafe): Condensed from article in Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer Vol. VIII, no. 7, 23 December 1911, pg. 14.....Owner John E. Brink of 236 South Spring Street opening an "after-theatre" cafe and will spend about $50,000 on the improvements (detailed in article). He leased the ground and mezzanine floors as well as basement of the Realty Board Building on the west side of Spring Street south of Sixth through the J. Ross Cambell Company. Plans handled by Architects Eisen & Son, 383 Wilcox Building.

The Holiday Hotel Reno Nevada

On far side of Truckee River, away from main drag and railroad station. Built as a highway travelers (automobiles) destination with access to a game reserve. Meant to be a mid-century sportsmen's paradise, this hotel opened as a non-gaming venture in a town full of high rollers. After one year, re-sold and gambling was added. Survived through numerous owners and changes, but now a residential situation. Reed & Barton Triplex. Odd H may be found in buildings signage near lower floors, but does not relate to billboard type signs on upper floors. Possibly from an early service.

Addt. info The Holiday Hotel.....Pattern shown as "Embassy" (1988-95) while still operated as hotel. Pattern appears to be truncated from more detailed "Maid of Honor" Turner design (1935). Whether a commercial useage of Embassy pre-dates the 1988 date is not yet clear.
