AMERICAN ASSAY SILVER BARS
An image of a 200 ounce silver assay bar. These bars were produced by the New York Assay Office located at Wall Street. Although the assay office sold gold bullion bars, it did not sell silver ones. Silver assay bars were exchanged for base bars, dore bars, or high-grade bullion of some kind for refining and they charged a certain amount for the cost of refining. The depositor gets refined silver bars in return, but not that which he deposited.
Each bar is stamped with the weight, the stamp of the Assay Office, the official insignia of the Government—the eagle, and the fineness is also stamped upon the bar.
This image is from 1905.
