BANKRUPTCY
Re Alfred Robert Bray, watchmaker and jeweller. Herne Bay. — This debtor underwent his public examination last month in the Canterbury Bankruptcy Court. The statement of affairs showed liabilities amounting to £210 Is. 7d., and there was a deficiency of £135 3s. 4d. The debtor commenced business in April, 1888. with £50 worth of stock given him by his father and £5 capital. He subsequently established a branch at Sturry. Mr. John Carnegie, solicitor, of London, attending behalf of Messrs. Loveridge & Sons, wholesale jewellers, endeavoured to show that the debtor had falsely explained his position to their representative. Attention was also called to the fact that the bankrupt had not disclosed a quantity of jewellery deposited with Messrs. Attenborough, pawnbroker, Strand, as security for a sum of £12. The examination was adjourned, the Registrar making an order for the bankrupt to file a cash account for the past twelve months.

It is sometimes said " the jewelers' is a poor trade after all," but it hardly seems so when we see that Mr. John Silvani, whose business we all remember at Brighton, has left the Sussex County Hospital a legacy of £10,000, and, further, the residual estate, which will probably be twice that amount, to say nothing of other four figure legacies.

The Birmingham trade is seriously affected by the stoppage of F. C. Evershed, of Brighton. I hardly remember ever having read a list of creditors which included at once so many local names, and for such large amounts. It reads more like romance than fact that such large liabilities should be built up on a starting capital of £60. Could any other trade but our own mismanaged one show such a record ? It is satisfactory to know that the affair is not to be patched up by a private arrangement, but that it is to be dealt with by the Bankruptcy Court. Mr. Attlee, chartered accountant, of Birmingham, is appointed trustee to the estate, with a committee of inspection, in which Birmingham influence largely predominates.

After informing the police of the theft of a brooch and a ring, worth around $1,250, a Folkestone jeweler went to his home, became ill and died within a few minutes. R. Brilliant, the jeweler in question, was in business in Hatton Garden for many years before opening an establishment at the seaport town. The other morning a man asked the price of some candlesticks in the jeweler’s window. The jeweler went outside to look at the articles indicated and while there was asked by another man what the cost of mounting some gold coins would be. After telling the man inside the price of the candlesticks the latter promised the jeweler he would be back with his wife. Immediately afterwards the ring and brooch were missed.
