The Gorham Mfg. Co. has placed on the retired list, James MacKenzie for 44 years a silversmith, and Carl E. Gunnerson, for 30 years in its mechanical department. Mr. MacKenzie served seven years apprenticeship in Edinburgh, Scotland, before coming to the United States in 1892.

The entire contract for silverware for the Biltmore Hotel to be erected at 43d St. and Madison Ave., has been given to the Gorham Co., from special designs furnished by them in harmony with the general scheme of decoration of the restaurant and other public rooms. This order is one of the largest orders ever placed for silverware for hotel use.

Gorham names distributors for Stegor flatware lines

The Stegor division of The Gorham Co. has announced the appointment of 14 authorized wholesale distributors for its silverplated flatware and stainless steel flatware lines.

The firms are: I. Alberts’ Sons, Inc., in Boston; Jos. B. Bechtel & Co. in Philadelphia; Boas Sons, Ltd., in Chicago; Butterfield Bros. in Portland, Ore.; Eisenstadt Mfg. Co. in St. Louis; A. H. Ficken Co. in Cleveland; Harry GreenwoldWallenstein-Mayer Co. in Cincinnati; J. H. Gross Co. in Cleveland; The Gorenflo Co. in Detroit; Wm R. Katz Co. in Dallas; S-K-L Co. in New York; Samuel Weinhaus Co. in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Nat Zuckerman & Co. in New York, and Friedman Gessler Co., Inc., in Los Angeles.

Gorham’s wholesaler advisory committee, which helps the Providence manufacturer to establish distribution policy, to date consists of: Jack E. Krueger of Eisenstadt Mfg. Co.; Chas. K. John Harris received injuries on his thighs, bruises about the abdomen and possibly internal injuries while at work at the Eddy St. plant of the Gorham Mfg. Co. last Monday when a piece of machinery fell upon him. He was taken to the Rhode Island Hospital.

PROVIDENCE

Frank D. Champlin will open an exclusive jewelry shop on Feb. 10 in Rooms 802 and 803, Union Trust Co. building, Westminster and Dorrance Sts., specializing in platinum and diamond pieces and special designs. He will also carry a small stock of regular gold and platinum jewelry. Mr. Champlin was formerly gold buyer with the Tilden-Thurber Corp., for two and a half years previous to last year and was at one time with the Gorham Co. in the Detroit store and with the Gorham Mfg. Co. at its Providence factory for eight years. He was at one time associated with J. Wiss & Son, Newark.

Joseph J. Laputka has been elected financial vice-president, treasurer and secretary of Gorham Manuacturing Co., and also vice-president, treasurer and secretary of Gorham’s subsidiaries: The Gorham Co., Alvin Corp., Mt. Vernon Silver Co. He succeeds Lester F. Morse, who retired Sept. 1.

Gorham Corp. has been awarded a $400,000 contract from Westinghouse Electric Co. for production of the antenna feed array for a three-dimensional radar and data gathering system developed by Westinghouse. Gorham said its ability to offer engineering, casting, machining, assembly and test facilities all at one location was a “major factor” in gaining the contract.

Gorham Corp. markets flatware in stainless

Gorham Corp. has entered the stainless steel flatware field with the introduction of two patterns in 18-8 stainless.

The new designs are “Swallow” and “Colonial Tipt.” The former, the company says, features an “incised motif” suggesting the “graceful sweep of birds through the dusk.” Satin and lustre finishes are contrasted on the handles.

“Colonial Tipt” is “inspired by colonial tradition for modern dining,’ Gorham said.

Both designs are available in a full range of place and serving pieces and in sets.

Gorham says magazine advertising will reach 156,000,000

Sixteen magazines will carry 60 full pages of Gorham advertising this fall, the company announced recently. Gorham said the total circulation of 52,000,000 issues is expected to reach 156,000,000 readers. A selection of advertising, promotional and selling aids supporting the consumer program is available to retailers.

Highlight of the fall campaign is a series of “design selection ads” which use a new photographic technique to dramatize “the wonderful look of sterling.”

A special “Dinner-For-Eight” advertisement on the program offer savings of $20, $25 and $30 on purchases of four, five and six piece place settings.

Roy J. Wood, secretary of Gorham Corp., was elected a director of the National Association of Accountants at the group’s recent annual meeting. Wood is a former president of the organization’s Providence chapter.

The contract to supply the silverware for new Hotel Baltimore, to be erected at 43d and 44th Sts., near the Grand Central Station, New York, is the largest order ever given any concern. The Gorham Mfg. Co. has the order, which calls for 18,000 pieces. The contract calls for special designs to be furnished by the Gorham Co., so that the table settings may conform with the general scheme of decoration. The immense number of pieces includes coffee pots, tea pots, sugar bowls, finger bowls, pitchers, platters, plates and numerous dishes and vessels of various designs. The contract was let by Gustave Baumann, manager of the new hotel, who was formerly manager of the Holland House. Fred C. Lawton, superintendent of the Gorham Mfg. Co. at Providence, R. I., was in New York recently in conference with Mr. Baumann in completing minor details of the contract.

Gorham Co. to Participate In ‘Mrs. America’ Promotion

The Gorham Co., Providence, R. I., manufacturers of silverware and silver products, has announced that it will participate in the 1957 “Mrs. America” homemaking promotion.

Through the contest, Gorham will be able to use the registered “Mrs. America” name in its national advertising and employ the photograph and testimonial of the winner of the national contest.

Gorham will stage a series of table setting competitions at the local, state and national levels of the “Mrs. America” contest and will award a 118 piece set of sterling silver to the national winner.

National finals in the contest will be held at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 7-14.
