R & W Sorley of Glasgow Extra Notes
Most of the information here came via Glasgow Post Office directories.
See also: https://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopi ... 89#p105489
Around 1880 Robert Sorley & William Sorley gave their name to a watchmaker, goldsmith, jewellery concern that they had been working in. William Jaffray (Jeffray) was its founder circa 1840 at 329 Argyle St. By 1860 also at 178 Argyle St, and only at number 178 by 1865. It was “William Jaffray & Co” by 1876 and the Sorleys were working there. By 1879 there was a move to 56 Buchanan Street and the firm was Robert Sorley and in 1882 it was Robert & William Sorley, with addresses of 136 Argyle Street and 1 to 3 Buchanan Street but William Jaffray was still at the firm in some capacity worker/partner. There was a silver mark registered at the Glasgow Assay office in 1881 and at around that time a chronometer, watch, and clock maker, goldsmith and silversmith business at 56 Gordon St. was acquired.
The names associated with that 56 Gordon St. address were William C. Shaw and Thomas Shaw.
By 1899 R&W Sorley had moved to 93 St. Vincent St., with an expanded business range and William Jaffray was still involved. The next image is a Glasgow Post Office directory entry for 1903-04. It is very similar to the 1899-1900 entry
Below is a transcript of the 1905-06 entry
Sorley, Robert & William, jewellers and silversmiths to His Majesty the King, diamond and pearl merchants, dealers in precious stones and antique silver, watch and clock makers (formerly Buchanan St. and Argyle St. corner), 93 St. Vincent Bt. Tele. No. 974 ; telegms. " Sorley," Glasgow.
Sorley, Robert & William, chronometer makers to the Royal Navy, 93 St. Vincent Street.
Sorley, Robert & William, watchmakers to the Admiralty, 93 St. Vincent Street.
Sorley, W. (of R. & W. Sorley), Viewfield House, Jordanhill.
They were obviously "dealers" also in electroplated items as shown by the marks on the base of a small tray, carrying their name but made by William Padley & Son of Sheffield.

In that 1905-06 Directory we do not see Robert Sorley noted individually and this corresponds to a change, when a William Steele joined the firm, as indicated with Glasgow silver mark being recorded as of "William Sorley & William Steele" trading as R&W Sorley.

Steele, Wm. (at John Smith & Co., 7 Princes sq.), ho. " Davaar," Pollokshields
................(Smith, John, & Co., diamond merchants, wholesale jewellers and watch manufacturers, 7 Princes sq.)
R&W Sorley were obviously an important Glasgow firm as shown in the 1911-12 Directory entry with royal appointments. The address had changed a little as being 93-97 St Vincent St on Renfield St. corner.

In the period up to 1940 silver marks were registered at the Birmingham, Chester, Edinburgh London and Sheffield Assay Offices and even at Dublin
I think this post covers most of the relationships that made this firm. One other directory entry did suggest another possible "player" though.

Sorley, Robert, watchmaker and jeweller, removed from Argyle St to 56 Buchanan Street ; ho. 1 Kersland Street, Hillhead.
Sorley, William, Jun. (of Robert Sorley, 56 Buchanan St), ho. Hamilton St., Partick
Who was "William Sorley Jun"? Could there have been 2 "Williams"? Look at the 1877-1878 Post-Office annual Glasgow directory.
Sorley, William, watchmaker and jeweller (of Wm.Jaffray, 178 Argyle Street), house, Hamilton place, Partick.
Could this have been a “Senior” to go with “Junior”?

JOHN BROWN & SONS
Duke Street, later, King Street, later, Portland Street, Kilmarnock
I learn with interest that the well-known and enterprising member of the Kilmarnock watchmaking and jewellery trade - Mr. M.S. Jamieson - has purchased the business of Messrs. John Brown & Sons, Portland Street, and entered into possession. The business is an old-established one, having been carried on for a long series of years in Duke Street, and for some time in King Street, before the present premises were acquired by the firm in Portland Street. Mr. Jamieson, who has been fourteen years in King Street, will continue to carry on business there, and the business in Portland Street will, in the meantime, be conducted by him under the firm name of Messrs. Brown.

Re: Scottish Advertisements and Information
The National Association of Goldsmiths held an executive meeting on the 23d ult and appointed a paid traveling representative moreover; the executive amended the rules so as to give greater power of discussion and representation to the various branches. But the feeling is pretty clearly demonstrated, in many parts of the kingdom, that unless infinitely more radical changes are made the association cannot Prosper. The three Scottish representatives on the executive resigned and the chairman, I hear, accepted their resignations; consequently Scotland is, at any rate until the annual general meeting, which takes place at Chester on the 8th, 9th and 10th of July, disfranchised. Meanwhile there is considerable discontent “over the border,” and I should not be at all surprised if this branch which comprises fully one-third of the whole association, severs its connection and forms a Scottish National Goldsmiths and Jewelers’ Association.

ALEXANDER DUNCAN
75, Buchanan Street, Glasgow
Considerable attention was recently focussed upon the windows of a well-known clothing establishment in Argyle Street, Glasgow, through the display in the windows of the handsome prizes presented for competition at the annual sports of the Celtic Football Club, one of the most important gatherings of the kind held in Scotland. The various prizes, I may mention, were purchased from Mr. Alex. Duncan, jeweller and silversmith, 75, Buchanan Street, and the striking and handsome display was certainly very complimentary to this well-known member of the trade.
