Re: Information Regarding Simons, Bro. & Co.
One of the finest clocks made in Philadelphia for some time past was presented last week to Elias P. Smithers, the register of wills, by the clerks in his office. The timepiece was purchased from Simons Bros. & Co., jewelers, at 614 Chestnut street. It is an imitation of the old Rittenhouse clocks of the colonial period and stands over 6 feet in height. The case is of richly carved South American mahogany. The dial is of silver and the figures thereon of gold. The clock contains two sets of chimes, the Westminster and Whittingdon. The Westminster chimes ring the hours in a solemn, stately sort of way, while the eight Whittingdon bells toll the quarters with an airy and rhythmical intonation decidedly pleasant to hear.
Above the dial on the face of the clock is a figurative moon, which shows the quarterly phases of the moon's face. The changes are regulated accurately by the inside mechanism of the clock. The works were made by the famous firm of clock makers, Elliott & Co., of London.
