Toronto Jewelers Disband After 86 Years in Business

A Toronto jewelry store, as old as the Dominion of Canada, is passing from the business scene.

In 1867 Kent Bros. was established on Yonge St. During the ensuing 86 years, despite two moves, it remained on Yonge St. and always had a Kent as president. Now that Sidney Louis Kent, last member of the family in the business is retiring, the name Kent will no longer be connected with the jewelry world.

When the firm moved to its present location on Yonge St. in 1946, it amalgamated with Fairweather, Ltd., and became known as Kent-Fairweather, Ltd. Silverware and jewelry were sold on the ground by Kent. Second and third floors used by Fairweather to sell women’s wearing apparel.

When the Kent “retiring sale” is completed, the firm will revert to Fairweather, Ltd. Silverware and jewelry will not be sold.
