This, presumabley, was the forerunner of the business of Carl Neuhöfer & Sohn, Kohlmarkt 8, Wien, that appears as from c.1881 as a 'Optiker & Mechaniker', k.u.k. Hoflieferant. They were to stay in business until 1925.

Member Bahner noted the following information:
Georg Adam Scheid: born 1838 (in Schönau, Germany), active since 1858 in the Viennese workshop of M. Markowitsch. Married one of Markowitsch’s daughters and joined the company, which was renamed Markowitsch & Scheid. The two separated in 1882, after that Markowitsch & Scheid was owned by Adolf Markowitsch alone (a son of M. Markowitsch, this company shut down in 1898), Scheid continued on his own, his company was named “G.A. Scheid”. He produced small silver ware and jewellery. In 1884 he opened up his own affinery (“G.A. Scheid’sche Affinerie”), which became very sucessful, which branches in various countries. Scheid retired in 1911 or 1912 (looks like he died in 1913), in 1920 the company “G.A. Scheid” merged with Ludwig Rainer (another affinery) in Vienna. Production of jewellery and silverware was given up at the end of 1922, the remaining workmen joined the Scheid’sche affinery. The affinery continued to exist and merged in 1952 with L. Rössler to form the “Ögussa GmbH”.

ANTAL BACHRUCH

Budapest

Member AG2012 added the below information:
Antal Bachruch was an important silver and jewelry retailer and importer, located in Budapest at the turn of 19th/20th century, succeeded later by the firm ``A.Bachruch succ.``
There are many silver pieces offered as ``maker`` A.Bachruch — Austria. Even reputable auction houses do not bother to search for actual maker’s mark.
Most probably, Antal Bachruch has never made his own silver and all items seen so far clearly bear genuine maker’s mark with A.Bachruch added. The obvious reason for this wrong attribution is his mark, always well struck and full lettering. Silversmiths should be respected and this wrong attribution kept in mind. The most obvious example is given:M.H.Wilkens & Söhne,Bremen, but again, A.Bachruch mark is very prominent.

Established in 1810 by Vincenz Mayer. Following the death of Vincenz Mayer in 1865, the business passed to his sons, Joseph, Vincenz und Franz Mayer.

The post war austerity that engulfed Austria after WWI and the collapse of the monarchy caused the business to close in 1922.

SCHIFFER & THEUER

Wien

Image

The business of Eduard Schiffer and Johann Theuer was very short lived, they formed their partnership on the 1st January 1862 and dissolved it on the 16th October 1863.

Eduard Schiffer, formerly of Franz Schiffer & Sohn, was a partner with Thomas Dub from 1858 until 1860. He worked alone until the partnership with Theuer, and then alone again until 1888.

JAKOB WEISS

Image

Image

Image

Jakob Weiss worked from at least 1833, until his death in 1848, after which his widow continued the business.

Remarks on the mark IW in a double eagle of Jakob Weiss (P2450-2463)
Jakob Weiss (authorization: 1833) is entered in the guild lists from 1837 to 1847. Mentioned in 1833 as a "bgl. Gürtler u Broncearbeiter" ("Gürtler" and bronze worker) he was accused of selling unmarked silver (HR 421/1833).

Company History:
1844. Surrender of the common factory authorization (HR 528/1844) and registration of the national factory authorization for the production of gold and silver wares.
1845. Instruction concerning the application for registration of the company and the power of attorney.
1848. Registration of the company "Jakob Weiss seel Wittwe" after the death of Jacob Weiss.

The double eagle mark of Jakob Weiss is clearly characterized by the IW. Although the mark on marks tablet VI shows an irregular contour (P2450) the oval shape of the marks on objects (1833? until 1840) is quite clear (P2451-2463).
