Cartier: Style and History

Image

4th December 2013 until 16th February 2014

Perhaps because it has been eclipsed by its famous name and the sparkle of its diamonds, too little is known even now about the rich and complex history of this great house of jewellery. Yet Cartier has played a key role in the history of the decorative arts. Its creations - from the classicism of the "jeweller to kings" to the radical inventions of style moderne - offer a fascinating testament to the evolution of taste and social codes.

The Exhibition will feature hundreds of pieces from the Cartier Collection and some loaned from museums and private collectors. Exhibits will include Grace Kelly's 10.47 carat engagement ring, Elizabeth Taylor's 'La Peregrina' necklace, with a pearl dating back to the 16th century, the Duchess of Windsor's flamingo brooch, designed by Jeanne Toussaint, Gloria Swanson's diamond, platinum and rock crystal bracelet, and other jewellery worn by clients of Cartier, including Lady Mountbatten, Mrs. Cole Porter and Barbara Hutton.
