PETER GILL
Banff and Aberdeen
Peter Gill was born at Fraserburgh in 1757, he was the son of Patrick Gill, a merchant navy captain who regularly worked the line between Banff and Holland. He served his apprenticeship under Gilbert Bannerman, a watch and clockmaker at Banff, and was admitted a watchmaker burgess there on the 21st April 1778. By 1783 in was in Aberdeen and admitted into the Hammermen there on the 1st September 1783. By 1824 he had taken his son, David, into partnership, and their business was trading as Peter Gill & Son, 13, Queen Street, and by 1839 at 80, Union Terrace, Aberdeen.
Peter Gill was thought to have retired by 1845, the business was continued by David until 1847, when he took James Smith into partnership, and the firm continued as Gill & Smith.
......... in Broad Street, Aberdeen, in the large house at the S.E. corner of Ragg's Lane, where one of his tenants was Peter Gill, Watchmaker (who died 26th Jan., 1850, at the great age of 93), grandfather of Sir David Gill, K.C.B., F.R.S., late Astronomer Royal at the Cape.

We understand that the business carried on by the late Mr. James Smith, in Market Street, Aberdeen, for a period of nearly 50 years–first as a partner of the firm of Gill and Smith, and latterly in his own name–is to be carried on by his son, Mr. W.A. Smith, under the name of James Smith and Son. The late Mr. Smith, who died on the 25th of June last, was well known over the greater part of Scotland, where he used to travel regularly. He was ever held in esteem by those who were acquainted with him, and by those with whom he had business connections. We are glad therefore to learn that his son, who has been associated with him for many years past means to continue the business.

MARSHALL & HISLOP
High Street, Ayr
The Burglary Season.–Recently the premises of Marshall and Hislop, jewelers, Ayr, were broken into, and a large quantity of goods stolen. The thieves, who seemed to have had a knowledge of the premises, got access from the river. They climbed a gate, opened a cellar door, cut a hole through a fireplace, and so got entrance into the shop. Here they carried on their work undisturbed, although the shop is situated in the principal thoroughfare –the High Street. Several gold and silver watches, rings and brooches, about one hundred articles in all, were missed. Since then, in the course of some alterations the cellar under the shop, some of the missing goods were found buried under the floor. The articles were, however, not sterling. A jemmy was also found, and a waistcoat with fifty pockets. Mr. Marshall's estimate of his loss, which was not insured, is £400. One man was apprehended at a coffee shop, who had in his possession a jemmy, skeleton keys, some studs, rings, and other things.
