He was born in Burntisland, Fife around 1804 and is listed in the 1841 UK Census as a journeyman watch maker living in Linktown, Abbotshall, Fife with his wife Jane and 4 children aged from 2 to 9 years, all born in Abbotshall.
He was listed in 1851 as a watch maker employing 1 apprentice living in High Street, Linktown without his wife but with his 4 children. His son James aged 17 years was probably the apprentice.
In 1861 he was still a watch maker living at 245 High Street, Kirkcaldy with his daughters aged 25 and 28 years.
In 1871 he was in the same trade at 247 High Street, Kirkcaldy, the last record found for him.

He was born around 1820 in Abbotshall, Fife. He was the brother of Thomas.
In 1851 he was a watch repairer living with his mother Sarah at 242 High Street, Kirkcaldy.
He was listed in 1861as a master watch maker at 97 High Street, Kirkcaldy living with his nephew James Black aged 12 years.
In 1871 he was again listed as a watch maker. He had married Isabella (born in England) and they had 3 children aged from 3-9 years all born in Kirkcaldy. They lived at 92 High Street, Kirkcaldy.
He had retired by 1881 living with his wife and 3 of their children at 41 Milton Road, Abbotshall.
Thomas Black
He was born around 1821 in Abbotshall, Fife. He was the brother of John.
In 1851 he was also a watch repairer living at 242 High Street with his wife Euphrates (born in England) but as a separate household .
He was listed as a watch maker in 1861 living at 94 High Street, Kirkcaldy with his wife and mother Sarah.
He and his wife were at 88 High Street by 1881 where he was a watch maker employing 1 man, probably his nephew James (see above) then a watchmaker aged 22 years and living with them
Thomas has retired by 1881 still living with his wife at 88 High Street where James ran the watch making business.
Thomas continued to be recorded in Kirkcaldy until at least 1901.

No UK Census record has been found for a George Lumsden in Pittenweem in 1841. He may have died between the date of the Directory entry in 1837 and the date of the 1841 Census. Lumsdens continued to trade in Pittenweem as follows.
David Lumsden aged 24 years was listed in 1851 as a watch maker living on the High Street with Agnes Lumsden who was a house proprietor.
George Lumsden born in Pittenweem around 1833 was listed in 1861 as a master watch maker employing Richard James aged 15 years as an apprentice. They lived in High Street with George’s mother Agnes and a sister aged 26 years.
He was listed in the same trade and at the same address in 1871 still living with his mother and sister.
He had married Ellen by 1881; they had 4 children aged from 3-8 years all born in Pittenweem. He was still at the same address as a watch maker and jeweller employing 3 boys and a shopkeeper.
In 1891 he was listed as a watch maker at the same address.
Ellen was still in Pittweem in 1901 living on her own means.

He was born in New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire around 1806 and is listed in the 1841 UK Census as a watch maker living in Duff Street, Gamrie (near Macduff) with his wife Helen and 3 children aged from 4 months to 6 years.
He was in the same trade at 38 Shore, Gamrie in 1851. Another 4 children aged from 6 months to 4 years had joined the previous three.
In the same trade in 1861 he had moved to 69 Shore, Gamrie. His son James (born 1846) was a watch maker’s apprentice.
He had changed address to 70 Shore Street, Macduff by 1871 and was still a watch maker employing 1 hand (sic). His son James, who had married and lived down the road at 50 Shore Street, was a journeyman watch maker and may have been his father’s right hand man.
James senior was dead by 1881 when his wife was listed as an annuitant living with a daughter at 70 Shore Street.
