And if any boys of a suitable genius incline to follow this business, he will, upon having a trial of their capacity, agree with them upon reasonable terms. He lives at Craigie Forbes's house in the Broadgate, Aberdeen.

John Barron & Son are recorded as a Clock and Watchmakers located at 11, Nether Kirkgate, in 1837.

John Barron, son of George Barron, Wright, was apprenticed to George Morrison, Clock and Watchmaker, on 1st November 1780, his apprenticeship was completed on 20th February 1786. Admitted member of the Hammermen on 8th February 1796, and admitted as Watchmaker Burgess on 23rd October 1797. On 23rd September 1796 he took Alexander Courage as his first apprentice, and by 1825 eleven apprentices had worked under him.

The Aberdeen Directory 1824 shows John Barron living next door to his premises at 11, Netherkirkgate. In 1832 he was joined by his son, also called John, and the firm was restyled John Barron & Son.
In 1833, John Barron jnr. took Alexander Gray as an apprentice, and the two were later, in 1846, to go into partnership as Barron & Gray. Around this date John Barron snr. retired and he died in 1852. He was buried on the 1st June, his home address being recorded as 83, Crown Street.

About 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, fire was discovered to have broken out in a shop in Correction Wynd, occupied by Mr. James E. Beattie, jeweller. The fire brigade had the outbreak subdued in a very short time. Several drawers containing silver and jewellery were destroyed, and the shop and fittings were considerably damaged. The fire is supposed to have originated under the counter, where some waste paper and sweepings were lying. The loss of stock is covered by insurance.

Admitted into the Hammermen of Aberdeen on the 14th February 1778, and described in 1779 as a Journeyman Silversmith. Admitted as a Goldsmith Burgess on the 4th September 1783. He was Deacon of the Hammermen in 1789.
Recorded as taking James Erskine as apprentice on the 30th September 1781.
James Smith's working period was thought to have been 1780 until his death in 1828.

ROBBERY OF JEWELLERY AT GREENOCK
On Thursday night, or early Friday morning, a daring robbery of jewellery was perpetrated from the premises of Mr. Lazarus Burwell, fancy emporium, Cathcart Street, Greenock. The burglars obtained access through the roof, which is partially covered with canvas, by cutting a hole with some sharp instrument. They appear then to have descended into the back part of the bazaar, which was guarded by two ferocious dogs; and having secured some lucifer matches, they commenced their plunder. Selecting the best of the stock, they carried off, amongst other articles of value, the following:- 160 gold rings, 30 gold pencil cases, 12 gold guard chains, seven Albert chains, 65 gold pins, 2 gold bracelets. The value of the whole property stolen amounts to about £500. The robbery has been committed by persons thoroughly acquainted with the premises, as they passed through the case of jewellery, and picked the most valuable articles which they contained, and, after securing their booty, decamped without detection by unlocking the back door.
