JOHN & PATRICK RIACH

High Street, Forres

Although always billed 'John & Patrick Riach', it was Patrick (real name Peter) that was the silversmith in this partnership of two brothers. Patrick was apprenticed to the Elgin silversmith, Charles Fowler in 1809 and upon completion of his term journeyed to Edinburgh to further his skills. In 1817 he entered into partnership with his elder brother John as Ironmongers, Jewellers and Silversmiths of High Street, Forres. John Riach died in 1836 and Patrick continued to run the business alone until 1859. He died in 1864.

An example of the work of John & Patrick Riach of Forres:

John & Peter Rioch are recorded as a Iromongers located at High Street, Forres, in 1837.

Although Patrick Riach's business is thought to have continued until 1859, the below advertisement shows that he desired to dispose of it many years earlier.

IRONMONGERY BUSINESS IN ELGIN

To be disposed of, an old established business, in the above line, with a select stock of goods, entirely adapted to the Town and Country demand; and the greater part of which has been recently imported. The shop is spacious, and moderately rented. The furniture is substantial and elegent, and the accommodation of the warehouse ample. The whole will be disposed of on very reasonable terms, with immediate entry if required. So favourable an opportunity for commencing business is of rare occurrence.
For further information, apply Mr Riach, Ironmonger, Forres; or to Grigor and Young, Writers, Elgin.
Elgin, 20th April 1840.

J. & R. GLEN

2 & 3, North Bank Street, later, 497, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh

The business of J. & R. Glen, Highland bagpipe makers of Edinburgh can be traced back to Thomas MacBean Glen (1804-1873) who was working at the Cowgate, Edinburgh in 1827. In 1866, Thomas's sons, John (1833-1904) and Robert (1835-1911), took over the business and the firm became styled as J. & R. Glen.

By 1911 the firm had passed to John's son, Thomas Glen (1867-1951) who moved the business to 497 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh. Thomas Glen retired in 1940 and the firm was then managed by Andrew Ross, who had worked for J & R Glen since 1911. In 1954, Andrew Ross finally became the owner of the business that he had employed with for over forty years and he continued to run it until 1978, he died the following year, 1979 and soon after this business finally closed its doors after 150 years of manufacturing.

J & R Glen were registered at the Edinburgh Assay Office. Their mark was 'J.& R.G' contained within an oblong with cut corners.

ADAIR & ROSS, formerly JOHN ADAIR

139, High Street, Dumfries

Image
Adair & Ross - Dumfries - 1911

The business of Adair & Ross was a continuation of the firm of John Adair.

John Adair sent work for assay at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh assay offices. John Adair's punch, as noted in the records of the Glasgow Assay Office, was 'J.ADAIR' above 'DUMFs.' The punch continued to be used by Adair & Ross as it use has been noted on a teaspoon assayed at Glasgow in 1903.

Adair & Ross were in business for the period 1897-1935

John Adair was in business for the period 1867-1896

An earlier recorded business of T. Adair & Son, c.1862, is likely to be connected.

John Adair opened his shop at 114, High Street in 1867. In the Dumfries and Galloway Standard of 5.6.1867 an advertisement describes him as a manufacturing jeweller, electroplater, gilder and watchmaker. It also notes that he was employed by John McLean of Church Place. He is recorded as sending parcels of silver to the Edinburgh Assay Office from 1869-1873 and is also registered at Glasgow (see Sir Charles Jackson's book 'English Goldsmiths and Their Marks' page 528). He is given a half page description in Stratton's 'Glasgow and It's Environs' (page 298) published in 1891. On a receipt of 1888 his billhead describes him as a "Manufacturing Goldsmith, Jeweller and Watchmaker". He is listed in the Valuation Roll of 1880 and in the Police Roll of 1893-1896.

JOHN F.B. DONALDSON

Sign of Lion, 10, North Bridge, Edinburgh

Image
John F.B. Donaldson - Edinburgh - 1881

Established 1818.

John F.B. Donaldson entered his mark 'J.F.B.D' contained within a oblong punch with clipped corners, with the Edinburgh Assay Office.

Trev.

MCB noted the following:

JOHN F B DONALDSON
The mark was first mentioned at Edinburgh Assay Office in 1897 and their website suggests it was renewed sometime after 1921. It was registered for use in watch and jewellery making.
The reference to his business being established in 1818 must relate to a predecessor as he was born in Edinburgh circa 1844.
The UK Census records list him in Edinburgh:
1851 aged 7 years living with his parents John G and Barbara Donaldson at Richmond Place; his father was a tailor and clothier;
1861as a watch making apprentice living with his parents at 4 Petterrow; his father was a spirit merchant;
1871 transcribed from the original onto website as “master out church and pariler employingshore apprentice” which may perhaps be translated as "master watch maker and jeweller employing one apprentice"? His name is similarly incorrectly transcribed as John JANE Baird Donaldson, his wife as CaHTerine ANN and he probably lived at 81a East Causewayside but who knows? The original record is not available for view as the Scottish authorities have not given permission for it to be published!
1881 & 1891 as a watchmaker and jeweller living at 17 Archibald Place with his wife Catherine Carr Donaldson and 4 children born between 1871 and 1879;
1901 as a master watch maker and jeweller at the previous address living with his 4 children, there is no mention of his wife.
He appears on the 1867 Post Office Directory and on websites in an undated directory as a watch maker and jeweller at 14 North Bridge and 92 West Bow, successor to J Millar. He had a house at 4 Lindsay Place. Perhaps it was Millar who established the business in 1818?
No Scottish Census records for 1911 or death records have been made available on line.
