Vintage silverplated candelabra hallmark

Post by sgshake »

Looking for indentification of unknown hallmark on a vintage silverplate candelabra. This is a large (16") candelabra that converts to a single stick & is weighted. The hallmark looks like a winged lion facing left. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

The mark you show is not a hallmark, it is engraved crest of a former owner.

Are there no other marks to be found?

That's interesting but I haven't found any other marks. Can you say if this is American or European? How could I find more information about it. It's very pretty and interesting but no silver marks that I see, however, magnet does not stick to it.

Thanks for your reply, it's appreciated.

Hi Sharon,

It's not uncommon to find unmarked silverplate, but I would suspect that it is English.

I couldn't find a match for the crest, the closest was that of the Sandys family, but the direction of the head is different.

Hopefully others will post their thoughts on this piece.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, the head is turned to the right. It would be great if someone identifies it for me and I will look further for other marks.

I inherited a pair that are almost identical.

I couldn't find any marks until I noticed some when the 3-light branch-piece is removed; when that piece is inverted I find "SILVER EDG'D" and the letter "A" on the face of the cylinder which inserts into the single candlestick. Also,in the sockets of the single pieces, where the upper part plugs in, there are marks, but they are not the same; one says "SILVER EDG'D" and has a slightly potent (to use the heraldic term) Greek Cross symbol incised, the other has the number "1237" and the initial "D". (I think that's a pattern number and the workman's initial.)

Mine also have the owner's crest where yours is, but it has a monogram beneath it.

I hope you get some info, as I haven't a clue as to the origin of mine. My mother always referred to them as "the Sheffield candelabra", but unless that cross (with the four equal arms with small cross-pieces at the end of them) is a Sheffield maker's mark I'm stumped.

Hi Peter,

Welcome to the Forum.

I think it best if you start a new topic with images of your item and the marks. Hopefully someone will be able to indentify the marks.

How to Add Images

http://www.tinypic.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is recommended.

Trev:
I wasn't trying to identify the marks on my piece when I submitted that post;merely trying to help Sharon to find marks on hers, as she had apparently requested. When I have some good pix of mine I'll try to post them and open the new topic.
I have one or two other unidentified pieces which may become future topics.
Thank you for your reply.

Trev,
One question on using Tinypic: your site instructions speak of picture size restrictions and Tinypic has a size selection 'pull-down window'. Should I leave it on 'Default", or select one of the pixel-defined options (they don't use inches to describe them)?

I always find the best way is to resize yourself using 'Paint' or a similar programe. It's very simple and you can be sure of getting the exact size you require.

Trev,
Not to be difficult, but, having used Paint, what then is the answer to my question regarding Tinypic?
