He entered marks at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1789 and in 1800 in partnership with Samuel Jobson as gold workers from 31 Gutter Lane. James Berkenhead (Grimwade p.363) had previously entered marks in 1772 and 1777 at Goldsmiths’ Hall as a small worker and gold worker from this address and had been assessed to Land Tax there until 1786.
On the death of George Seatoun (Grimwade p.283) in 1787 his apprentice James Saunders was turned over to Berkenhead who is identified in the document as a freeman of the Weavers Company and a jeweller in Gutter Lane.
As John Berkenhead & Co he was assessed to Land Tax on property in Gutter Lane from 1787-1800. Later assessment books are missing.
Others who signed indentures to be his apprentice were Edward Renwick of Walthamstow in 1787 and Walter Colley Sanderson of Clerkenwell in 1793.
