Unknown vinaigrette

Post by Postnikov »

Hi -

I have a friend, she collects vinaigrettes from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I just bought one to make her happy - but I do not know what it is.
Please have a look at the pics of the mark - it is "normal" and 180° turned.
Maybe someone can tell me who the maker is etc.

Any help very welcome!

Regards

Hi,

According to Tardy, p100, the elliptic mark seems to be the Danish Aalborg town hallmark in use around 1800.

I dont believ that it is Aalborg.
Aalborg was my first idea, when I saw it. But I soon sayd Germany. City mark is not Aalborg.

When Aalborg was suggested (by dinio) I searched Aalborg smiths - but there are none that even come close.

This type of silver (if danish) is most likely Sønderjylland - oppersite side of Aalborg (Nordjylland)
Sønderjylland has borders towards germany and the Northern part of germany once was danish.

So I am sure that it a german piece.

Hi Hose_dk -

thank you for your input - I suggested Northgermany, but I do not know much about this vinaigrettes - only what my friend tell me or what I see in her collection. There are many pieces from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany - mostly without or very hard to decipher marks.

Can you recommend books covering this subject - here in Germany I could not find anything relevant.

Many thanks again

In Denmark Bøje is the relevant book. 3 books sold out long ago - and no planes to reprint (publish again)
Regarding germany I am not an expert or even skilled. But I am sure that some of the experts will pass this question - just wait a few days.

Another question led me to the danish city of Sønderborg. And this is city mark from that town 1800dreds.
That leads me to around 1830 to 1850 for your item. In makers mark I see
J P S - now try to see the individual letters - Only the S am I sure of. Which letters do you read?
