Thanks, that's fine for the measurements.
The letters on each side of the shield are EP and NS ( ElectroPlated Nickle Silver ).
Can't see all the letters in the shield mark. Can you tell us what they are ?

If the top letters are D&S check out this thread:

That mark looks like Davis & Sons of Glasgow to me.

Not sure what your piece was used for.
Wait for other opinions. Sometimes it takes a while.

I do not know the size of the item... but could it be a relish serving container?

Hi, given the dimensions, it's probably a butter dish, and a Celtic revival one at that, which would marry reasonably nicely with its Glaswegian makers provenance? Its styling appears derived from a more prestigious cousin, the Stilton dome, examples of which you can find in china from such heavyweights like Wedgwood, Doulton etc, as well as from any high-rent silversmiths of note. Davis of Glasgow were important silversmiths locally, working in sterling first, plate second, and therefore habitually exposed to demands from patrons for this kind of item, and propagating such lines into plate for bourgeois patrons would be a savvy business policy to pursue. Its sculpted forms aspire to greatness... :-)))
