help identify Edinburgh makers mark ID

Post by aamullen »

I have a punch bowl ladle with the makers marks ID in an oval. Can anyone tell me who that is? The other marks (and please correct me if I identified them incorrectly) are a three towered castle in a square for Edinburgh, a thistle in a shield for Scotland, a capital H in a shield for a date of 1712, and a profile of a man in an oval.

Thank you for your help. Sorry I do not have a photo.

My understanding is that a thistle mark was only introduced in 1759, and the old man in profile (the duty mark) in 1784. Depending on the form of your date leter H, perhaps it could be 1787.

A possible maker for this period is James Dempster.
