Swedish silver by GAB ; help ?

Postby fripou » Fri Jan 04, 2008 1:10 pm

I have bought a couple of Swedish things, as I like Swedish silver very much.

Here are two "vases"

1° Hammered silver, 21 cm high, 16 cm diameter. Engraved as a price for a Swedish automobile club.

Signed GAB, catfoot, "S" for Sweden, St Erik for Stokholm D8 for 1930

2° 14 cm high, 10 cm diameter ; nicely decorated ; engraved "David d. 12 April 1900"

Signed GAB, catfoot, St Erik for Stokholm V6 for 1899

Can someone please give me inforamtion about this GAB silversmith ?
He seems to have been very productive, as lots of Swedish silver is by this firm.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Go to this page http://stamps.swedac.se/index_ie.asp?sLang=sv

there you can find silversmiths active after 1913. Note that if a person was active both before and after 1913 he will appear as established in 1913 - and that is not the case.

just add mark GAB in "Namnstämpel" - you only need to fill in 1 information.

Hello, the Guldsmeds Aktiebolaget (GAB) is not a small workshop but quite a big company. It was founded in Stockholm in 1868 by A. Ambrosius, G. Th. Folcker, P. Fr. Palmgren and E.E. Petterson. The company is - to my knowledge - still active. Best wishes, Bahner

On object hallmarked after 1913, you find the letter S in addition to the "cat's paw", but it does not stand for Sweden (which instead the three crowns in the cat's paw does), but for silver. Likewise, platinum objects after 1925 are marked P.

Some additional information on GAB: GAB is now owned by the Swedish company Gense. Mema/GAB is their brand for silver cutlery. (Mema is another old Swedish silver company.) Gense is since 1995 a part of the K.A. Rasmussen group: http://www.ka-rasmussen.no/en/content.a ... nuItem=171
