Does anybody recognize the makers mark?
I can't tell wether it is "H" or "JL" or something else.
The item is a teaspoon, bought in southern Norway. The engraving from 1850 is in norwegian or danish.
Any information would be appreciated!
Regards, idarf
Incomplete markings. Unfortunately not much to tell but your spoon is most likely from the Danish countryside during the early first half of the 19th century. The fineness of 12 loth was and still is an illegal fineness but commonly used in the Danish districts in those days. It was difficult to get raw material silver in legal fineness. Due to that the makers used rather commonly silver in only 12 loth and as well punched 12L Due to the illegality the town mark and assayers punch is also missing. Therefore I don't know who made it and where from it is (could be Jens Lassen from Tønder, but..???), anyway, as said most likely of Danish origin. The prick engraving says: To the memory of LT 1850. In Norway 12L was never used.
Thank you for your kind reply. I do see the point about the missing town and assayers marks. Jens Lassen (Tønder, 1760 - 1783) is a bit earlier than I would initially expect.
You are welcome. Regarding the maker. I wrote could be...??? in brackets. Please, do not draw any conclusions between the prick engraved year or engravings in general and manufacturing year. The engraving could have been made much later. There is hardly ever any connection between engravings and manufacturing year except for that engravings are never made an earlier year.
