Hi all,
I recently acquired an American sterling silver compote stamped “925/1000” with the maker’s mark Shreve, Stanwood & Co., dating to circa 1860‑1869.
Christie's
The piece measures about 27.9 cm high, and features classical profile medallions and a Greek‑key rim.
I’m trying to determine a few things:
Would this fall under the category of “American sterling manufacturers after 1860” that this forum specializes in?
Is there any additional maker’s mark detail I should be searching for (e.g., city, partnered silversmiths) that helps confirm authenticity and date?
Based on your experience, how rare is a Shreve, Stanwood & Co. piece from this era marked “925/1000”, and are there typical patterns or model numbers collectors look for?
Any photograph‑friendly tips for showing the hallmark and item (angle, lighting, scale) would be appreciated because I plan to upload images soon.
Thanks for your help!
