Russian silver? Religious? Maker?

Post by Vantlicht »

I need some help with this silver artifact. It looks like something that you wear on your head. The size is 23 x 28 cm.

I guess it is Russian because of the hallmarks. Is there somebody who can tell me more about how this is used and maybe the maker and the time?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Just as a note, the item is religious. Its called a riza and it is used to adorn Orthodox Christian Icons. So that piece acts as the halo around the Saint.

Thanks Matthew, I searched on the internet, but cannot find a piece that looks like mine. Are there not so much copies or left in churches?

Hello!
This is not a riza (риза). This is a coronet (венец). See examples:

My understanding is that the halo on such icons is called a Riza, and that the metal cover that covers the rest of the Icon is called an Oklad (оклад)

Regardless, I believe we are referring to the same thing.

Such things are still commonly found, but it's mostly on antique icons, though you will sometimes see modern icons with them.

Hello, Fr_Matthew!

The riza (риза) and the coronet (венец) on the icon are different elements of the frame (оклад), covering different parts of the icon. The riza is an overlay decoration covering the clothes of the saints on the icon, symbolizing their spiritual purity and grace. The coronet is a halo, an adornment around the head, symbolizing divine light and holiness. Thus, the riza covers the body and clothes, while the coronet surrounds the head, emphasizing the spiritual status and holiness of the depicted.

Regards. Alex.
