29 Stall Street, Bath, Somerset. Watchmaker /Jewellers Shop

I have copied this image of a Jeweller and Silversmiths shop from another post on the Forum.

Image

The picture proclaims “H&R Marsh” is the owner of this shop but the date of the image is unknown. I also have this image of a fork with the same branding so apparently retailed by the same Bath concern, but again of no obvious dating potential.

Image

Kelly's Directory of Somerset for 1919 does place, Marsh, H. & R., jewellers at 29 Stall Street, Bath.

The entry in the 1911 Post Office Bath Directory, matches better with the shop front, 29, Stall Street “watchmakers, jewellers and antique dealers” and identifies that “Marsh, Horace Henry” and “Marsh F. Reginald” could possibly be trading as H. H. & F. R. Marsh and maybe later as H&R Marsh. Listings below.

Marsh H. H. & F. R., watchmakers, jewellers and antique dealers, 29, Stall Street (Tel. 2yi)
Marsh F. Reginald (H. H. & F. R. Marsh), 29, Stall Street
Marsh Horace Henry (H. H. & F. R. Marsh), 29, Stall Street.; residence, 36, Gay Street

A difference between 1911 and 1902 directory entries could be informative regarding personnel.

............Post Office Bath Directory, 1902
............................Marsh, H. & F. R., watchmakers, jewellers and opticians, 29, stall street
............................Marsh, Frederick R. (H. & F. R. Marsh}, 29, Stall Street
............................Marsh, Henry, 29, Stall Street
............................Marsh, Horace H. (H. & F. R. Marsh}, 29, Stall Street

The firm appeared then to be, "H. & F. R Marsh" and there is an extra "Henry Marsh" listed. My speculation, but could this be a father and son firm first and later 2 brothers.

Another name was also associated with 29 Stall Street in the 1902 directory though, as there was a “Olds William G. & Co., watchmakers, &c.”. Additionally Olds W. G. & Co., was also at 29 Stall Street in the Bath Jewellers listing. Do we have 2 different concerns sharing 29 Stall Street or could family “Marsh” have been part of Olds William G. & Co.?

There was no "Marsh" at 29 Stall Street in 1897 or 1895, but a William Greenslade Olds was there. In 1884-85 William was still there as part of a Charles Olds & Son concern, but it was just Charles Olds in 1876-77.

.............Kelly's Directory of Somerset, 1897
.........................Olds William Greenslade, watch maker 29 Stall Street
............Post Office Bath Directory, 1895
........................Olds William Greenslade, watchmaker and jeweller, 29, Stall Street
............Post Office Bath Directory, 1884-85
........................Olds Charles & Son, watchmakers and jewellers, 29, Stall Street,
........................Olds William Greenslade (Olds & Son), 29, Stall Street
............Post Office Bath Directory, 1876-77
........................Olds Charles, watchmaker, and jeweller, 29, Stall Street

In 1864-5 Charles Olds was at 24 New Bond Street, though in earliest directory listing I found for him, 1842, he was at 22 New Bond Street

...........Post Office Bath Directory, 1864-65
.......................Olds Charles, watchmaker, jeweller, &c., 24, New Bond Street
...........Slater's Directory of Berks, Corn, Devon ..., 1852-53
.......................Olds Charles, watch and clock maker, 24 New Bond St.
...........Bath Directory, 1846
.......................Olds Charles, watchmaker and jeweller, 24, New Bond St.
...........Pigot & Co.'s Directory of Derbys, Dorset ..., 1842
......................Old Charles, watch and clock maker, 22 New Bond St

It is likely the concern started in the previous decade if this ring box silk pictured can be believed, as H&R Marsh proclaim “Established 1835”.

Image

H&R Marsh did last, at least, well into the 20th Century and were silversmiths (as indicated on the shop front), registering their mark with the Birmingham Assay Office with just fob medals, noted for the period 1913 to 1931. I assume they retailed this Sterling silver Boar War sweetheart pin broach circa 1900.

29 Stall Street, Bath, Somerset. Watchmaker /Jewellers Shop

...........H&R Marsh

I inadvertently omitted to upload this image with the earlier 29 Stall St. Bath post.
An advert from 1911 and proclaiming “Established 100 Years” and H&R Marsh are calling themselves “The Jewellery Exchange”

Piper Connection
High Street, Exeter

The city of Exeter in Devon and the surname "Piper" is already mentioned in 3 posts on the Forum. However, it does not appear to be the same "Piper" in all of the 3 posts.
Below is the directory entry that brought my attention to the "Pipers", there being a pair of "Misses" in charge of an Exeter, High Street business of as jewellers, silversmiths & importers of fancy goods.

Besley's Post Office Directory of Exeter & Suburbs, 1894-95
++++++Piper, Misses Sophia and Emma, jewellers, silversmiths & importers of fancy goods, 241 High Street

There is a J & E Piper, noted in the below post.

viewtopic.php?p=159917&hilit=exeter+pip ... 0%26%20SON

This post relates to the firm of William Bruford (W. Bruford & Son) and suggests the 241 High Street business of J&E Piper was acquired by "Brufords" in 1899, but I believe that it may not be exactly correct as indicated by the below directory entry.

Kelly's Directory of Devon & Cornwall, 1902. [Part 1: Devon]
++++++Piper S. & E. (Misses), jewellers & silversmiths, 241 High St. Exeter

For 1906, however BESLEYS' STREETS DIRECTORY Exeter 1906 lists
+++++Bruford, William, & Son, jewellers, silversmiths and importers of fancy goods at 241 High St.

I did not find directory entries for J. & E Piper but there were entries for Misses Sophia and Emma Piper pre-dating the1894-95 entry I listed earlier.
Kelly's Directory of Devon, 1889
+++++++Piper Sophia & Emma (Misses), jewllrs.& silvrsmths. 241 High St Exeter

In the 2nd Forum post referring to "Pipers", a business of J. & E Piper at 241, High Street has an advert with the suggested date of 1882. The post can be seen in the below link.

viewtopic.php?p=182256&hilit=Exeter+pip ... h%20Street

This trade entry in fact pre-dates the advert in the 1882 link

History, Gazetteer & Directory of Devon, 1878-79
+++++SILVERSMITHS JEWELLERS FANCY REPOSITORIES
++++++++Piper Misses S. & E. 241 High St.

The 3rd Forum post referring to "Pipers" can be seen in the link below.

viewtopic.php?p=183121&hilit=Exeter+pip ... e%20Arcade

There is a date of 1882 for the advert relating to a new business set up by "M.K.Moxey", after having been working for "Mrs & S & E Piper" for 13 years. This pushes the Piper business back to circa 1878, and close to the below trade directory listings.

History, Gazetteer & Directory of Devon, 1878-79

SILVERSMITHS / JEWELLERS / FANCY REPOSITORIES (3 entries)
++++++++Piper Misses S. & E. 241 High St. E

Questions are asked by the “Moxey advert”. Who was the "Mrs"? The mother of Misses S. & E. Piper? Who was the Mr Piper then?

Could it have been the "W. Piper" in the next trade directory entry?

West of England & Trewman's Pocket Journal, 1859
++++++++++++Piper, W., hairdresser & perf., 241, High-St

A "W Piper" was at 241, High-St in 1856, but at 234. High-Street in 1851, and both as hairdresser and perfumer.

A secondary list, referencing Whites Devonshire Directory of 1850 gives a Piper Wm. at 334 High Street as a hairdresser and Perfumer. Additionally, there were William Piper, Perfumer, adverts in the “Exeter and Plymouth Gazette” at 241, High-St Exeter in late 1853 and at 236 High St in 1833. There could possibly have been more than 1 generation of William Piper in the history of the business and possibly the chance of error in recording early shop addresses.

Note on M.K.Moxey.
Milford Kemp Moxey was still a “jeweller&watch ma.” at 5 Arcade, High St: in 1889, but before the mid 1890’s the firm “Moxey & Co” was at 5 Arcade. The same concern was at that address into the 1st decade of the 20th century.

BROCK & Co.

Plymouth

The Plymouth Electroplating Industry.— Attention has recently been called in the local press to the fact that, although the electro-plating industry is not usually associated with Plymouth, there are several Plymouth firms who do a considerable amount of it, Messrs. Brock and Co. using on an average 30 oz. of silver per week.
