L77 mark on gold(-plated?) pendant

Post by aks62 »

Picked this up at a yard sale and have been trying to decipher the mark - or at least the composition - for a while. Can’t find this “L77” mark or any meaning for it anywhere. Appreciate any leads! Image

:::: Do you have a way to go to a jewelry shop or a pawn shop? You could call them in advance and ask if they have an electronic gold tester (a wand that looks like a pen) or a sigma metals analyzer (a platform-type device) or if they use the acid-test to test gold (they scrape the gold item on a slate and then apply one drop of acid to see how fast the streak of gold on the slate disappears). ::::::::

:::: Just based on the "L 77" hallmark I am led to believe that "L" is the makers mark and "77" is the year it was made (1977), it would have been made in a jewelry studio as a project, that is my best guess. :::::::

::::: Search with a magnifying glass to see if you can find a "14K" or "10K" fineness mark, but sometimes studio jewelry does not have a fineness mark even though it is solid gold :::::

::::: There are similar "rock n' roll hand" pendants that are made of solid 10K and 14K gold (though yours is the best and the largest that I've seen so far) and given the way your pendant looks (it has that "softness" and the right color for gold) it is something I would have taken a chance on, it doesn't immediately strike me as brass but I could be wrong and that's why we need to get this in front of someone who has the appropriate gold-testing equipment ::::::

(other cultures use this hand-sign, so it's not only rock n' roll, the origin of this symbol goes back many hundreds of years, it is used by various cultures to ward off evil and therefore ensure good luck, didn't mean to imply this is only used in rock music, turns out it is a popular symbol in Italy to protect against the evil eye)
