Dutch silver spoons unable to identify marks

Post by populous38 »

Hi Guys
I recently purchased two dutch spoons. 77.4g each. Both have almost identical marks.
The bowls have a lion rampant with a number 1 and a key. Both spoons have english import marks for london 1898.
The reverse of the bowls have the marks in the photos. The stems have a Minerva head with what looks like a M on the helmet.
There is another mark under the Minerva mark which I can't identify.
Any help greatly appreciated. Are these pseudo marks.
Cheers Gary

Hi Gary,
Yes these are pseudo marks. The stem is crowned with a female figure with three children for the personification of Love. Like the divine love of a mother for her children. The spoons are made and assayed in Schoonhoven, office mark or Minerva head with regional assay office letter M for Schoonhoven.

The unclear mark, a small version of a sailing ship, pseudo maker’s mark (#468) .

These type of pseudo marks are typical for Herbert Hooijkaas/ Fa.(Firm) H. Hooijkaas 1874-2008; Zilverfabriek Schoonhoven.

Thanks Peter
Great to know all this. Had a look at the link. Very interesting read.
I Guess with the export key and London import mark they were made between 1853 and 1898.
I feel I know a little more about pseudo marks now
Appreciated as always

Hi again Peter
Thanks for suggesting a maker,
narrows the dates down from 1874 to 1898.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Gary,

You're welcome. It is known that the English importers of continental silver made, among others in Schoonhoven and Hanau with pseudo silver hallmarks, sent around commercial agents with orders. Order books were also used. Often the English import date (year letter) is the same or slightly after the year of production. Of course there are also exceptions.
