Mystery pseudo hallmarks

Post by OldSchool »

I have come across a set of pseudo hallmarks that have got me stumped.

Image

On the right hand end is a bishop's mitre which, at first glance, looks like a crown. Next to it is a an animal that I assume is supposed to look like the Lion Passant denoting British sterling silver, but it's not. It's a ram, or a figure of Aries. Second in from the left is the outline of a man's head, again, supposed to look like the Duty Mark on British silver. Then there's the "maker's mark" on the far left, which appears to be "dd", but they're lower-case, when most British maker's hallmarks are upper-case only.

The marks appear on a meat dish ...

My assumption is that this is silver plate, with marks intended to look like British silver assay marks, but I can't find any other examples, or identify the true maker. Has anyone seen these before?

Many thanks for any advice.

Hi,

It's a mark we've seen many times on the forum, always on plated items.

Thanks Trev. This piece is in the US, and my inclination is to think this is also American silver plate. Have there been any thoughts on who made it, and perhaps when? It looks to be good quality, and I was assuming early C20th.

Yes, very likely early 20th century and American.
