1699 Amsterdam 'William and Mary' Spoon

Post by legrandmogol »

I don't hold out much hope anyone knows the maker of this spoon as the maker's mark is not fully struck. But the rest of the marks are for Amsterdam 1699.

Hello,

Beautiful, old  William & Mary decorative spoon, fig-shaped bowl. I totally agree with your date for Amsterdam, year letter N is 1699.
Because we are certain of the year, it may also make searching for the silversmith easier. I have looked in the book Amsterdamse Zilversmeden en hun merken by K.A. Citroen, and I see similarities with the following maker's mark, shown on page 227 anchor

The mark on the spoon enhanced and turnedImage

The anchor is for: Engelbert Schepens, born 1676 in Norden (East Friesland), son of Georg Schepens en Catharina Muhlen. Engelbert registered in Amsterdam 1698-1727(dead). He married in 1698 with Eva Zchammer. He specialized in cast spoons

Thanks Peter, you're definitely spot on for the maker. I can see it now that you say it.
