WHOLESALE ROBBERY OF SILVER PRIZE CUPS

Thomas Fry, aged twenty-eight, of 94, St. James's-road, Holloway, a silversmith's assistant, was charged at the Clerkenwell Police-court with stealing on the 12th ult., from the Agricultural Hall, nineteen silver presentation cups, the property of Messrs. Mappin, silversmiths, of Regent-street, of the value of £89, in the parish of Islington. The prisoner was further charged with stealing a £5 note, the property of his employers.

The prosecutor stated that the prisoner was in his employ, and on the 12th of the present month in the morning he had nineteen or more silver presentation cups entrusted to his charge, to take them to the mule and donkey show, at the Agricultural Hall, and his duty was to have brought them back in the evening. He took them away, and he had not seen him or the cups since. The cups were exhibited in the hall during the day, and then the prisoner packed them up and decamped with them. He also charged the prisoner with stealing the sum of £5, which he had received for the sale of one of the cups.

The prisoner, who seemed to feel his position very acutely, said he did not wish to ask any questions.

Police constable James Alfred Lammas, 274, City, said that, hearing that the prisoner was in the neighbourhood of Snow-hill, the previous night, and knowing that he "was wanted" for stealing plate from the Agricultural Hall, he went to a house in Hosier-lane. He rang the bell, and the prisoner answered the door. He asked the prisoner if he knew any one of the name of Fry. The prisoner turned pale and trembled, and then said, "No." He (the constable) then said, I believe you are the young man," and, receiving no answer, said, "I am sure you are." The prisoner then said his name was Fry, on which he (witness) said, I shall take you into custody for stealing nineteen silver presentation cups, the property of your late employer, and a £5 note." The prisoner made no reply, and he (the officer) then asked him if he had any friends on Ludgate-hill, and he said he had a mother whom he should like to see. He then took the prisoner to the Smithfield police-station, and whilst there the prisoner's mother came in and spoke to him. She said, "How came you to rob your employers ? What has become of the property ? The prisoner said, "The property is all right. It is just as I took it away." The mother asked him where it was, and the prisoner said, "At Birmingham. I took it to my uncle's to take care of. The prisoner then added that the cause of his committing the robbery was all through his keeping bad company, and that had led him to do what he never should have done had it not been for that.

The Prisoner said it was all true, and he had no defence to make.

The magistrate remanded the case for a week.

At this week’s meeting of Mappin & Webb, Ltd., at Winchester House, Chairman Sir Charles Eves said that the scheme for the rearrangement of the capital has been confirmed by the High Court, which has enabled the directorate board to place the company’s finances on a thoroughly sound basis. Despite the critical year recently passed, the company has done well, the chairman said. While total turnover was slightly smaller, the London houses have done better than ever, with a corresponding addition to profits. The Sheffield plant has been fully employed. Good contracts have been obtained for supplying new London hotels and railroad and steamship companies, including seven new passenger liners. The demand for “Princes Plate” has materially increased. The year’s trading produced a profit of nearly $370,000. Including the balance brought forward, there now is available some $885,000. A dividend of 8 per cent. will be paid on ordinary stock to Dec. 31, last. The chairman admitted that in the current year things have opened badly, due to the full effects of last year’s depression now being felt. The company, however, is now in a position, he says, to face any ordinary trade fluctuation.

Despite the reports of the slump in the silver plate trade in Sheffield some very handsome displays of solid silver and silver-plated goods are being made in London these days. Good silverware, well polished, makes as beautiful a window display as it is possible for a jeweler to have. Mappin & Webb, who have their own factory in Sheffield, are making some fine displays of solid silver ware in their Queen Victoria St. and Poultry establishment. Several windows are devoted to a sparkling exhibition of solid silver condiment sets with legs and handles all of one piece, in five and six-piece outfits. Other windows feature beautiful silver trays, entree dishes, ash trays, tea and coffee sets, candle holders, flower holders and so forth.
