Ivory handled knife

Post by amena »

I know asking about this knife here is a bit of a stretch, since the only bit of silver is the collar connecting the blade to the handle, and it has no marking.
However, I hope to have your opinions on dating and provenance, even if only by feeling.
Or even just a suggestion on where to look.

Hi amena
there is a makers mark on the blade.
Why don't you ask in a specialist knive forum about the blade mark? There are some competent fora out there.
The ivory "Herma" with the little putto on the back looks like baroque, maybe late 1600 or early 1700.

Many thanks, Joerg for your opinion.
I searched for a forum specialized in knives, but, it seems to me, they mostly talk about hunting knives or daggers, rather than table knives.
I have a very good book on cutlery :" Historiche Bestecke".
Among the blade marks in this book there is one that closely resembles the one on the blade of my knife, but I don't have enough experience to tell whether it is exactly the same mark or just a resemblance.

Everything would lead to dating the knife to the late seventeenth, but it seems too good to be true.
I'll keep researching to be sure.
Best
