Russian silver cutlery - gift from Russian diplomat

Post by CFH »

Hello, I have inherited these cutlery from my great-grandfather Oscar Holtermann who was chamberlain at the Swedish court, late 1800s. He is said to have received these as a small gift in connection with a dinner with Russian dignitaries. I have not been able to decipher the stamp. I see 84 on the handle of the knife, so I'm guessing this is the silver grade.

Search for complete set of marks on spoons and forks.
The blade is made of steel and inserted into silver handle with ``84`` fineness; not enough to tell the maker.

Hello! Your knife was made in two factories.
1. The steel blade of the knife was made in the middle of the 19th century at the factory of Ekaterina Maksimovna Yakovleva- ЯКОВЛЕВОЙ- (the former factory of Countess Anna de Broglio).
2. The silver knife handle, spoon and fork were made in a silver workshop. You need to see the stamps with the initials of the master to find out his name.

At that time there were 4 silversmiths with the initials "МД" in Moscow. Matvey Denisov (Матвей Денисов) is the most preferred.
