A wage increase has been announced by the Whiting & Davis Co., Plainville, Mass. The company’s employes number about 800 persons. A notice was posted in the plant that a general increase would be granted in all departments. Employes on piecework will receive a proportionate advance. The amount of the increase has not been stated. Charles A. Whiting, head of the concern, said to a representative of The Jewelers’ Circular: “Our factory being among the very few firms which did not make a general reduction in wages during the dull times will now be the first in the jewelry industry to voluntarily give a general advance, taking effect May 7. All factory employes who have not received a recent advance will benefit. Employes recently advanced will not. Pieceworkers will benefit in proportion.”

Following a meeting of the board of directors of the Whiting & Davis Co., Plainville, last week, was announced that beginning Dec 4 every employe would be granted a 10 per cent increase in wages. The increase, which is a voluntary one on the part of the company, was given because of the increased cost of living. The increase will continue until April 1, 1917, and if business conditions warrant it will be made permanent. Frank E. Whiting of Chicago and Charles A. Whiting of the factory paid the New York office a visit last week.

Whiting & Davis Chain Co., Plainville, Mass., Introduces Attractive Costume Sets

The importance of the ensemble in women’s costumes is responsible for the introduction by the Whiting & Davis Chain Co., Plainville, Mass., of attractive costume sets, consisting of pendant, brooch and earrings which match. Matching pieces are now considered by fashion experts as in better taste than more expensive pieces which do not harmonize in color and shape. Jade, sapphire and other colored stone effects are artistically combined with sterling silver settings in several designs by Whiting & Davis Chain Co.

The new sets come in modern, tastefully designed colored leatherette cases lined with satin, which may be used as display or jewel cases. They retail at $12.
