Silver Ladle - AK

Post by beaumolo »

Can anyone help me identify this hallmark? Picked up at a car boot sale in the UK. Seller said everything in the pile was silver plate, but I thought otherwise and took the risk. From my research and past posts, I think the hallmark is Alexander Katsch/Katch/Kach who was involved in silver plate but is there a chance that it could not be silver plate? There seem to be a few items online which suggest that items with an AK hallmark are silver. This for example:

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Please embed your images, as very few members will click on links.

Hello "beaumolo", have you tried to post the the picture of your ladle's marks again? I have an image I would like to post for comparison. My image has the "AK" under a crown mark but with another letter mark to go with the heads. Do please try to post your images again.

Hello, here is my likely Alex Katsch mark compared to beaumolo's.

Image

The heads with the lower mark maybe look more "feminine" and perhaps less stylised. I think the lettering could be "G.P." and wondered it could be a Russian or German abbreviation for the manufacturing material, for as shown by the adverts he had outlets in both of those countries? We know that in British silver plate there are lots of names and short forms that were used.

Hi Fishless,

GP between the heads means Galvano Plated.

Thank you "Oel" for that little nugget of information regarding "GP" and "Galvano plated". I will try to remember that for future use. Regarding the "Katschs", there is a lot of information on the Forum but just a bit spread around.
